Zahabi (13-2) entered the fight riding an impressive six-fight win streak, with notable victories over Aoriqileng, Javid Basharat, Pedro Munhoz and former champion José Aldo. A win over Vera had the potential to propel the No. 9 bantamweight into the top five and put him firmly in the title conversation.
Round 1 – Both men came out of the first round patiently, trading kicks and staying defensive. Zahabi began to have more success with his jab as the round progressed, charging in with more confidence and forcing Chito to the cage. The round continued at low volume, with an injury to Vera’s finger highlighted in the replay.
Round 2 – Zahabi came out with more kicks, one of which was caught and used to attack Vera. The Canadian began pushing into boxing range more often, swinging big hooks as he crashed inside. Vera dropped Zahabi with a big jab, but Vera grabbed instead of following with strikes, allowing him to escape.
Vera started pushing forward and landing combinations, successfully mixing with the body. Zahabi recovered well and started landing in the final minute of the round, ripping some nice knees and big 1-2s.
Round 3 – Vera started Round 3 with a front kick returned by a knee from the Canadian. Vera then started to open his hands and threw a few short combinations into the pocket, which were also returned by a swarming Zahabi, who has had great success with his blitzes so far.
Both men remained tactical in their submissions and found success in throwing, but Zahabi landed some solid leg kicks. As the final seconds passed, both men began brawling in the center of the cage, throwing big punches as the bell rang.
Aiemann Zahabi is coming off a seven-straight win streak and moved up to T7 in the bantamweight division.
