In Four Futures for Jobs in the New Economy: AI and Talent in 2030, the Forum outlined four plausible scenarios for how AI advancements and workforce readiness could work together to transform jobs, value chains and economic growth. The report draws on insights from the Forum’s Chief Strategy Officers Community and global foresight experts.
Survey data cited in the article revealed deep insecurity among business leaders. About 54 percent of executives worldwide expect AI to displace existing jobs, while only 24 percent think it will create new jobs. Nearly 45 percent expect rising profit margins as a result of AI adoption, but only 12 percent expect higher wages, indicating that productivity gains may not translate evenly into higher wages for workers.
The Forum emphasized that technology alone will not determine the future of work. “The future of workplaces and value chains will not be determined by technologies alone. Human capital strategies and investments that are prioritized today will determine how well societies and individual companies can adapt to – and lead – the new economy,” the report said.
The four scenarios range from Supercharged Progress, in which rapid AI breakthroughs drive innovation and new professions, to The Age of Displacement, in which automation outpaces reskilling efforts, leading to rising unemployment and social instability. Two other futures foresee slower or more uneven progress: the Co-Pilot Economy, where AI mainly augments human work, and Stalled Progress, characterized by skills shortages, patchy productivity gains and rising inequality.
In all scenarios, the report emphasized foresight as a strategic tool rather than a forecasting exercise. The white paper was part of the World Economic Forum’s Scenarios for the Global Economy Dialogue Series, which aims to help decision makers navigate complex global transitions through structured scenario analysis and cross-sector dialogue.
As AI rapidly evolves from experimentation to integration, the Forum concludes, the choices companies and policymakers make in the coming years will play a decisive role in determining whether AI becomes an engine of shared prosperity or not.
