When AI buys the coffee: how agentic commerce is changing eCommerce
Imagine telling your AI assistant, “Think me the perfect gift for a coffee snob,” And within seconds, it recommends a few options – complete with “Buy” buttons right there in the conversation. That kind of seamless shopping is already in motion.
This shift continues to happen Chatgpt’s Agentic Commerce Protocol. For agencies building e-commerce sites, the rules of discovery, conversion and control are about to change (again).
Openai’s instant checkout feature Let’s users purchase items directly within chatgpt (starting with Etsy Sellers). It uses the Agentic trading protocolwhich was built alongside stripe and introduced as an open standard. In this model, Chatgpt surfaces product cards, and if a merchant supports instant checkout, the user can tap “Buy” and complete checkout without ever leaving the chat.
WooCommerce is also preparing for this new era WooCommerce MCP and the Skills API that uses the Agentic Commerce Protocol. Soon, AI users will be able to communicate directly with WOO stores for ordering and store management.
Agencies building e-commerce sites have a bit of a learning curve, but we also have a huge opportunity. Those embracing complexity now are those that customers will turn to when AI-powered shopping becomes the norm.
