After penalties, Bournemouth win the match ratings and commentary on all Newcastle United players

3 minutes, 41 seconds Read

We asked Mark Jankowski to give us his match reviews and player commentary after Newcastle United won 7-6 on penalties against Bournemouth in the third round of the FA Cup. The match ended 2-2 after normal time and then 3-3 after extra time.

Ramsdale 9

Some huge saves from Ramsdale today and not just in the shootout.

Obviously his heroic penalties will grab all the headlines, but it was one of Ramsdale’s better performances of the season.

Trippier 7

A first start back after an injury for Trips.

He had a pretty good game but was caught out of pace in the build-up to Bournemouth’s second goal.

Thiaw 7

Much better from the German after his unusual performance in midweek.

We had a bad fall late but managed to shake that off, which is important with our current defensive injuries.

Botman 7

Another return to basics after an injury.

In an ideal world I don’t think he would have been on the pitch after 60-70 minutes, but Eddie Howe’s hand was forced by circumstances.

Livramento 7

Tino was wasteful a few times with his final ball, but covered well while on the field.

Unfortunately, he appears to have suffered a hamstring injury, which could see him out for a while.

Willock 6

I thought he started the match pretty well, even if his vision wasn’t always what it should have been. He missed a fastball on the right wing more than once.

In the second half he was rightly substituted because he had almost no strength left.

Ramsey 8

Today was probably Jacob Ramsey’s strongest performance in black and white.

It’s not a particularly large sample size, but he was always looking for positive runs, with and without the ball.

He made way for Bruno as we chased the game, but if he can build on today he will start to justify the transfer fee.

Show 8

Tonali has one of the best engines I’ve ever seen on a player.

It was his persistent running that earned our late penalty and he was always ready to press on or go back.

He still wasn’t 100% (he does have a newborn at home, so he can be forgiven) but we won’t win that match today without Sandro.

Barnes 9 (MotM)

He is our most in-form player at the moment and he put in another clinical performance in front of goal.

I hope he can keep this run going for as long as possible as it is a crucial stage of the season.

Woltemade 8

Big Nick played in a slightly deeper role today, more similar to the role he played in Germany last season.

He looked like he was enjoying himself too, his through ball for Barnes’ opener a sumptuous pass.

He worked very hard out of possession, but could have improved his performance by working on a bit more movement off the ball while the team was in possession.

Warning 6

An absolute sitter missed in the opening minutes.

He worked hard with his movement today, but apart from his big early chance he didn’t have a huge impact on the match.

Hall 7

Played well after coming on for Tino, with excellent passing and dynamic dribbling into space.

We will have to look after him as he goes forward as we are now desperately stretched out at the back.

Miley 8

I’m going to say it… I think our young number 67 should be on a plane to the US this summer.

He continues to perform at an exceptionally high level, no matter what role is asked of him.

Joelinton 8

His presence was felt almost immediately after he took the field.

If he can continue to play at the level he is at now, I have no doubt he will be another player going to the World Cup later this year.

Gordon 7

He made an immediate impact after coming on, stretching Bournemouth’s backline.

In a high-pressure situation he expertly sent his equalizing penalty and delivered an excellent cross for Barnes’ second goal.

He made an absolute meal of a golden opportunity as time went on, but made up for it in the shootout.

Bruno 8

I think he has a case to be the best midfielder in the league alongside Declan Rice this season.

I was hoping we could get through today without having to play him, to give our captain a well-deserved rest, but once we fell behind his introduction was necessary.
