Former bomber Simon Madden and his wife Mary have sold their home at 2 Edward St, Essendon.

Bombers legend Simon Madden and wife Mary will say goodbye to their Essendon home of 40 years after it fetched $2.75 million at auction on Saturday.

Madden played for Essendon from 1974 to 1992, captaining the team for two years and winning four club best and fairest awards.

He later served as a director of Essendon and director of the AFL Players Association, in addition to running his own consultancy firm.

Madden previously told the Herald Sun that he and Mary were downsizing from the Edwardian-era house at 2 Edward St where they had raised their four children.

The house is within walking distance of Windy Hill.

Paul McDonald of McDonald Upton said the residence, with a range of $2.6 million – $2.86 million, was sold to a family with children who loved the location and architecture.

“It was the right size for them and the guy works in the city and can take the train,”

“It was sold by a very nice family and it was sold to a very nice family.”

The house initially attracted an offer of $2.5 million, but was sold shortly afterwards to the buyers, who approached Mr McDonald after the auction.
