The San Diego Padres own the best bullpen in baseball. The eight arms that are part of the Friars bullpen have an ERA of 3.03. The next best is from the San Francisco Giants with an ERA of 3.25. One of the biggest reasons for that success is the effectiveness of the high-delivery relievers that are known as the Four Horseman (thanks Mike Shildt for that).
Jeremiah Estrada (2.64 ERA), Adrian Morejon (1.66 ERA), Jason Adam (1.93 ERA) and poet Robert Suarez (3.50 ERA) combine for an ERA of 2.43. Their success in finishing games is responsible for the Padres who won many of the games in which the starter could not go deep into a game.
Adrián Morejón had a breakout year last season. He was signed as an international player in July 2016 after an overload from Cuba and was eligible as a free agent. He debuted in 2017 as an eighteen year old. In the coming different seasons, the Padres waited for the highly appreciated prospect to stay healthy and to reach its potential. The injury bug was a problem for each of his professional years, culminating in Tommy John operation in 2021 after he had thrown in a handful of Major League matches as a starter. After rehabilitation of his operation, he returned to the Major League team in June 2022 and threw out of the bull pen but threw only 34 innings. He also briefly threw three levels of the minors.
He was again on the IL in 2023 with an elbow disguing and spent the rest of 2023 with El Paso after his rehabilitation due to that injury. After the beginning of 2024 with El Paso, Morejon was promoted to the Major League team and had a great season from the Bullpen last year. He ended the year with a 2.83 ERA for the brothers.
In Dennis Lin’s Article for athleticsIt was revealed that the Biomechanics Lab from Padres Morejon, with Pitching coach Ruben Niebla, helped to lower his arm slot and improve its effectiveness and speed. As a result, MeoreJon has remained healthy and has achieved unprecedented success. At the age of 26, MeoreJon is still a young pitcher and he will be under the Padres control next season (he will be a free agent in 2027 and is a client of Scott Boras).
Morejon’s pitch use is a bit different than what he used as a starter. Like most pitchers at high speed, the LEFTY trusted 62% of the time on its fastball (2022 Statistics). His four seam Fastball is now his fifth throw in his arsenal. Morejon uses his zinc 59% of the time and his sliding controller 26%. Then comes his cutter, his change and then his four seam (it is now the least used of his fields with an incident of 4%). According to Baseball SavantHe also thrown one Knuckleball.
His change is not the usual circular change. That is retired and he has now developed the latest pitch in baseball, The Kick-Change.
The field made his debut in May against Ronald Acuna JR of the Atlanta Braves and, according to the athletic article, was only thrown 27 times this season. But it has been effective. With five legitimate pitches, MoreJon has a 1.9 bwar, an 8-4 record and a 1.66 ERA threw in 48.2 innings. He has two saves and has only allowed one home run with 49 strikeouts and nine walks. Hitters have a .162 average against and a speed of 26.3% K.
Current closer Robert Suarez Leads the National League with 30 Saves. He has an opt -out at the end of this season and it is very likely that he will practice that to look for a better contract. Suarez is 34 years old and should get the best on this point of his career. The Padres will be needed a new closer next season and Morejon is currently leading the High Leverage Relievers in Era. His pitch Arsenal is Elite and his mental resilience cannot be questioned. The organization could do much worse than give Meorejon the opportunity to take on the closer role.
