The Pelicans in New Orleans signed the former head coach of the University of Washington and the old Syracuse assistant -coach Mike Hopkins as an assistant coach and head of player development. This was originally reported by ESPNs Pete Thamel.
Hopkins was an assistant for Syracuse from 1995 to 2017 and was part of the 2003 National Championship winning team led by Carmelo Anthony. During his time at The Orange he worked together with Pelicans Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations Troy Weaver, who was also an assistant at the time. He then received a head coaching from the University of Washington from 2017 to 2024. During his time there he won the PAC-12 Coach of the Year Award twice.
Hopkins spent his first season as a coach last season in an NBA team with the Phoenix Suns.
During his almost 30 years of coaching at the collegial level, Hopkins was someone who has done an incredible work that motivated young men. This is something that will only take over if he now comes to the Pelicans on the sidelines.
With young talent such as Derik Queen, Jeremiah Fears, Micah Peavy, Yves Missi and Jordan Hawkins, the addition of Hopkins will pay for dividends. He can use his abundance of coaching experience to develop and get the most out of these young players.
This type of boost for the staff of Willie Green is one that helps to install a winning culture and determine a standard of professionalism that is usually found only at the university level. Hopkins is not the fun, foolish assistant coach, but rather someone who will be honest and does everything he can do to get the most of these young boys.
Troy Wevers Fingerprints are all about this movement
Since he came to the Pelicans, Troy Weaver’s fingers have been everywhere in the makeup of the Pelicans. So far, Weaver has contributed to a lot by -Hoopers, such as Hunter Dickinson, Derik Queen and Saddiq Bey. Although I am not a fan of Hunter Dickinson and my opinions about Queen are mixed, the addition of Hopkins in my own class is.
Although he has an earlier connection with Hopkins, I don’t really see the not -‘s -offspring that has been shown with other movements. I see this movement as the pelicans who just bring a different weapon on the sidelines and perhaps another potential successor to Willie Green.
Bringing in Mike Hopkins is a movement that should excite Pelicans fans because he comes in and has a huge impact on this young team.
