Ruben Amorim’s search for a midfielder fell through this summer, with INEOS instead focusing on improving their attack.
The Portuguese had asked the co-owners to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Hove Albion, but his valuation proved to be beyond United’s reach.
There are rumors that the Red Devils could return for the 21-year-old in January, but it is unlikely The Seagulls will offer too much discount.
Another thing to keep in mind is the shape of the Cameroonian. Since being linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer, the former Lille ace is yet to complete 90 minutes in a single game this season.
Baleba poses concerns
Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler has spoken about the extent to which these rumors have affected the defensive midfielder, and his inability to deal with the pressure has given United’s decision-makers pause.
According to i NewsThe INEOS hierarchy now feel that Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton has met their every requirement, with the England international quietly going about his business despite links to United, Liverpool and Real Madrid.
Furthermore, he is a superior playmaker compared to Baleba, with Wharton’s passing ability compared to former United great Michael Carrick.
Whether the Eagles will sell remains to be seen, as recent reports suggest they are keen to tie him down to a new long-term deal. However, the Englishman wants a release clause to be included so that he can join a top club in the future.
“Adam Wharton has overtaken Carlos Baleba on Manchester United’s list of transfer targets. Ruben Amorim is seen as an admirer of the Crystal Palace midfielder’s directness in play. When Wharton is given the opportunity to pass forward, rather than sideways, he more often than not goes for it.”
Wharton’s superior playing skills
“Baleba has been a long-term target to revolutionize United’s midfield, but the Brighton midfielder’s inauspicious start to the season has convinced some at the Premier League’s most successful club to explore a move for a completely different player profile – and Wharton fits right into that picture.
“Sources have told The i Paper that Wharton’s effortless dominance, along with the fact that Baleba appears to be struggling for attention having not played a single full 90 minutes for Brighton this season, has led to several senior United figures reconsidering their shortlist.
“One insider compared Wharton to the way Michael Carrick approached the game, someone who remains a popular figure around Old Trafford.
Now it’s up to Amorim to choose
“A calming influence, a midfielder from another level with the ball at his feet would not be out of place now,” says the insider. “Baleba has more control over the field, but does he have Wharton’s quality on the ball? The club could use the latter.”
While the Brighton star’s energy would be a huge boost, the 20-time English league champions could do with an orchestrator at the base of their midfield, with Bruno Fernandes having too much to do at the moment.
The final cost of the operation will likely decide who ultimately comes to the Theater of Dreams, whether that’s Adam Wharton or Carlos Baleba.
