Active lives: more children are playing table tennis every week – Table Tennis England

According to the latest figures, the number of children who play table tennis every week is increasing Survey report on active lives of children and young people released today by Sport England,

The research shows that in the academic year 2024-2025:

  • About 298,400 children and young people at school in grades 1-11 in England take part in table tennis in a given week (approximately 4.8% of the population). This has increased from 288,000 in 2023-2024
  • About 210,800 boys at school, groups 1 to 11 participate in table tennis in a given week (about 5.6% of the population). This has increased from 195,003 in 2023-2024
  • About 85,400 girls at school, groups 1 to 11 participate in table tennis in a given week (about 2.3% of the population). This is down slightly from 88,598 in 2023-2024

Across the wider sports landscape, the number of children and young people taking up sport and physical activity in England is at its highest level since the Active Lives Survey launched in 2017-2018.

  • Over half a million (580,000) more children meet Chief Medical Officers (CMO) guidelines to participate in sport and physical activity for an average of 60 minutes or more every day than seven years ago – an increase of 5.8%
  • 49.1% of children and young people are classified as ‘Active’ if they average more than 60 minutes of physical activity per day
  • The report also shows that inequalities persist between children and young people, with participation in sport and physical activity varying widely between different demographic groups.
