ABC commemorates Papua -NEW -Guinea’s 50 years of independence on September 16 with a series of content on its various platforms.
ABC teams have worked for more than 18 months to produce the range of content that explores the colonial legacy of Australia in PNG, and the first 50 years of PNG as a united, independent nation.
ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks said: “The ABC is with PNG when celebrating its rich history, culture and journey to independence. We are delighted to offer a broad spectrum of content over our channels, where we underline the importance of the historic moment for Papua -Guinea and Australia.”
ABC International Head Claire M. Gorman said: “We are incredibly proud of the ABC’s memorial content, much of it produced in collaboration with PNG’s public broadcaster, the NBC. It is creative, moving and especially the voices of PNG in the stories.”
Highlights of content of the ABC’s coverage in Australia and about the Indo-Pacific;
A 60 -minute screen and audio documentary Wan Kantri: the next 50 years, investigates the history, spirit and various traditions of PNG’s people, deeply connected to their roots and with confidence looking at the future. The film was produced by ABC International Services in combination with PNG’s National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) and supported under the DFAT-Financed Media Development Initiative, with Kathy MCleish from ABC Backroads as executive producer and NBC’s Maurea Oroea-Hosting.
A screening documentary PNG of 60 minutes: Road to independence tells the moving story of the leaders born in PNG who unite culturally and linguistically in a peaceful transition from Australian colonial rule to give birth to their new nation. The film is an ABC co-production of Wildbear Entertainment, written and directed by PNG-born journalist, filmmaker and former ABC news director Max Uechtritz.
An 11-piece series of audio and screen mini documentaries entitled Pasin Wantok, produced in collaboration with NBC, investigates the various cultures and traditions of PNG firsthand, which remain strong in a rapidly modernizing nation.
A special edition of 30 minutes from the ABC Australia Pacific, reflects on 50 years of Nation-de Successes and the challenges and what is the next for PNG.
The Port Moresby agency of ABC News supplies inland independence reporting for ABC news channels in addition to special segments for flagship Current Affairs Program, 7.30.
ABC Education will release an educational “Digibook” for Australian and PNG students to find out more about the period, with important moments of PNG: Road to Independence with associated questions.
60 minutes of special edition of ABC Australia’s That Pacific Sports Show, filmed in Port Moresby, with host Sam Wykes and Special Guest Co-Hosts Nesia Daily’s Michael Chow and award-winning sports journalist Jamie Haro. The episode investigates how sport unites the people of PNG and celebrates the sporting bravery of PNG today and in the future.
