Arlington, Texas – There is no running of the fight of Devin Williams, but the Yankees will not run from Williams either.
Aaron Boone said on Wednesday morning that the Yankees ‘should continue to run there’, despite the fact that Williams Back-to-Back days comes in which he blew the match-a 5-4 lead in the ninth inning Monday and a scoreless game in the eighth inning Tuesday, both of which ended in losses.
It seems likely that Boone will try to find a number of lower liver landing spots for Williams his next few times, as he did earlier this season after he temporarily removed him out of the role of the closer. But the Yankees are also not going to hide him.
“It is similar to after a rough start [this season]He gathered out of it and really threw up consistent work for a few months, “Boone said on Wednesday before David Bednar insured the five-out Save in an exciting 3-2 victory over Globe Life Field.” No reason to think he can’t do that again. He has the equipment to do it, and hopefully a small rough patch here and there we get through it. ”
The Yankees believe that if they will be the team they think they can be, Williams will play a role in what a strong bull pen could be.
But it has not happened lately, because Williams has given up a point in six of his last eight trips with a 9.39 ERA during that piece. It is reminiscent of how he started the year when he had an ERA of 11.25 during his first 10 games.
Between those pieces, Williams threw up to a 2.63 ERA in 29 games, which gives the Yankees hope that he can still be an important arm from the bull pen.
“I think wherever he throws, if he throws the way he is capable of, he has the chance to be enormously successful,” said Boone. “Part of it now is that after the deadline we brought in a number of boys who have a lot of back-end, closing type experience. We will try to get these guys in the best places to be successful.
“Everyone has to pull their weight and get it done.”
Round 2 of Anthony Volpe versus Jack Leiter went to the Yankees Shortstop.
In a matchup of the best friends and former Delbarton school teammates, Volpe again got the best of Leiter with an RBI single in his second battle that brought the game into the fourth inning.
Volpe and Jasson Domínguez then removed a double stem that led to a new run on a throw error of former Yankees-Catcher Kyle Higashioka during the last battle of Leiter.
Volpe and Leiter had cooked for the first time last season, when Volpe 1-out-2 hit, the same statine he had on Wednesday.
Mark Leiter Jr., the cousin of Leiter, also took the victory for the Yankees after throwing a scoreless inning of relief.
Fernando Cruz (sloping tribe) threw his first full Bullpen session on Monday and was able to continue to Hitters in a live batting practice session on Sunday.
Ryan Yarbrough (sloping tribe) will now throw his first live session on Thursday or Friday. The Yankees intend to take him to the 30-35 pitch in his progression before they decide whether they want to bring him back as a reliever or continue to build him up to re-enter the rotation.
