“I’m so glad you decided to post/write about the illegal drugs used in horse racing. I am a Canadian who has been racing Standardbreds as a member of Standardbred Canada in Ontario since my father passed away in 2005 (second generation). Since that time, the amount of illegal drugs used has spiraled out of control. I have (along with my wife) witnessed countless times of horses being treated – by trainers, by vets, sometimes by working together – just hours before they went racing. It’s a common occurrence This happens in Ontario these days – in fact, it’s EVERY day.
“Over the past 20 years – since the introduction of gambling money (government subsidies) – the cheating/abuse has made its way from the ‘claiming’ ranks to North America’s largest and richest races. I have contacted multiple media outlets, but NO ONE will report on this subsidized by the taxpayer abuse and deception.
“Horses are dying, and the same cheating/abusive owners and trainers continue to make millions every year. It’s money that could be used for better purposes – education, healthcare, transportation, etc. It’s clear the industry can’t police itself, and the penalties (fines and suspensions) are a joke, nothing more than a slap on the wrist.
“These abuses need to be told to the public. Thank you.”
