If you’re looking for the perfect little Northern California getaway that seems far away but is still completely doable in one day, Guerneville is calling your name. Tucked in the Russian River area of Sonoma County, this funky, woodsy town has it all: towering redwoods, quirky charm, and truly delicious food.
This is exactly how I spent the best day trip to Guerneville (and yes, it involves mini golf and ice cream!).

Guerneville Day Tour Route
Grab sandwiches and have a picnic
First stop? Lunch! We came in Picnica gourmet deli that doubles as a boutique for fun homewares and local finds. Since we were heading to Armstrong Woods, it felt like fate that they… Armstrong Woods sandwich on the menu. It was packed with chicken salad, currents, cashews, apple, garlic aioli and greens on hearty whole wheat bread.
Perfect picnic fuel! (Also, I may or may not have been tempted by their Guerneville trucker hat – it’s that cute.)

Picnic + walk among giants in Armstrong Woods
With sandwiches in hand we drove just a few more kilometers Armstrong Redwoods State Park. The picnic tables at the entrance are hidden in the redwoods, so we ate lunch literally surrounded by giants – it doesn’t get better than that.
Then we walked along the Pioneer Nature Trail (an easy 1.6 mile loop). Highlights? The Colonel Armstrong Treea breathtaking 1,400-year-old sequoia standing 300 feet tall, and the Forest Theatera natural amphitheater where plays are sometimes performed.

Play a round of Pee Wee Golf
OK, hear me out: Mini golf in Guerneville is a experience. Pee Wee Golf and arcade is funky, nostalgic and wonderfully weird – in the best possible way. Built in the late 1940s and 1950s, the course retains much of its retro charm, but the new owners (a lovely local family) are lovingly restoring it.
Yes, it’s a little crumbly here and there, but that’s what makes it so fun. Plus, they’ve added extras like table tennis, corn on the cob and barbecue areas.

Shop + walk through the city center
The center of Guerneville may be small, but it is mighty. Don’t just stay on the main street, but also walk along the side roads.
A few of my favorites:
- Books and letters: A cozy bookstore with an old community typewriter where you can leave a little message (how charming is that?).
- Fife Creek antiques and collectibles: This shop is filled with everything from retro records and vintage jewelry to Native American art, antique glass and quirky garden decorations.

Pre-dinner cocktail at El Barrio
Next: cocktails. The neighborhood is a mezcal, tequila and bourbon-focused cocktail lounge with major style points. Think Mexican tiles, colorful decor, moody lighting and one of the coolest bar bathrooms I’ve ever seen (yes, you read that right).
I had the Rosita gin cocktail, which was perfectly balanced and full of flavour. Strong, smooth and just what I wanted for dinner.

Dinner at Trillium
For dinner, go to Trilliuma cozy tent with oyster bar and wine bar. Their menu includes seafood, salads and creative small plates, plus a nice selection of local wines.
We ordered the Firework with sesame oil, cucumber and chili crunch (so fresh and flavorful) and the Stuffed Focaccia Pastrami Sandwichlayered with provolone, roasted garlic, sauerkraut and arugula. I could eat that focaccia every day of my life.
Note: Another great place to dine is Boon Eat + Drink. You can’t really go wrong with either one.

Ice cream dessert at Nimble & Finn’s
No perfect day trip ends without ice cream, right? Nimble & Finnslocated in the beautifully restored Guerneville Bank Club, is where I got my favorite drink.
The flavors are playful and creative – lavender honeycomb, rose cardamom, passion fruit caramel – alongside classics such as chocolate and vanilla. I went for the Peanut Butter Chocolate Broken Cone and let’s just say… zero regrets.
Between the vintage couch setting and the handmade small ice cream, this is the tastiest way to end a day in Guerneville.

Make it an Overnighter
If you decide to turn your day trip to Guerneville into an overnight stay (which I highly recommend!), you have some incredible options that I recommend.
Boon hotel + spa is a modern, adults-oriented boutique resort nestled among the redwoods of the Russian River Valley. It’s the kind of place that combines affordable luxury with total relaxation. Think lounging by the solar-heated saltwater pool, sipping local wine while playing lawn games, or cruising into town on one of their signature orange bikes. You can even relax with a massage at the hotel’s spa or simply cozy up in your room with organic linens and a vinyl record playing in the background.
Another good choice is the Highlands Resorta tranquil, adults-only retreat surrounded by towering redwoods. It’s within walking distance of downtown Guerneville and Johnson’s Beach, yet it feels like a peaceful retreat. Mornings start with a home-cooked continental breakfast of fresh granola, bread, fruit and local Flying Goat coffee, and the lobby is stocked with local wines and snacks for later.
