A new flyers deal has fans keeping a close eye on Trevor Zegras

A recent signing by the Philadelphia Flyers may have hinted at upcoming plans for star forward Trevor Zegras. Christian Dvorak’s contract extension wasn’t a huge surprise, but the terms of the deal were perhaps a little alarming. Some may feel it was an overpayment, but for the Flyers, this could have been the start of keeping a vital duo together.

The Dvorak contract led to a bigger question in Philadelphia: Does this deal make a Trevor Zegras extension inevitable?

If Zegras’ early signs and comments are any indication, the answer leans toward yes.

Zegras spoke about Dvorak’s new deal: the two are quite close

Zegras, a pending RFA acquired from the Anaheim Ducks, has looked comfortable since arriving in Philly and sounded very much like someone who plans to stay. When Dvorak’s extension became official, Zegras was thrilled with his linemate’s decision to commit long-term.

Trevor Zegras could be close to an extension with the Flyers

“It’s cool to see someone his age decide this is the place he wants to be and feel like we can win,” Zegras said. When asked if he felt the same way, his response was immediate. “Absolutely. Absolutely.”

This does not mean you sign a contract, but it does contribute to a growing body of evidence. Zegras even witnessed Dvorak finalize the deal late Sunday night, a small moment that speaks to the chemistry – and comfort – that developed within the group.

Would the Flyers be willing to pay big money for a Dvorak and Zegras Duo?

Dvorak’s own expansion is polarizing. He’s approaching 30, has never surpassed 38 points in a season and has been given a long-term commitment that many believe exceeds his market value. That said, if he has good chemistry with Zegras and the two will be tied at the hip for several seasons, that context matters. It shows how aggressively the Flyers are willing to keep the two together.

According to Kevin Kurz of The Athletic, Zegras’ extension is already considered “inevitable” internally. Kurz suggests a deal worth around $9 million over five years makes sense — meaning the Flyers are projecting close to $15 million per season for the pair.

The Flyers clearly believe they are building something. Dvorak’s deal may not be universally loved, but if it helps secure Zegras in the long run, it may ultimately be remembered as the first domino to fall.
