For the second year in a row there is a new club champion at the Mattawa Golf and Ski Resort. Congratulations to Len Gushe for winning the last stage of the Match Play Club Champion event. He is very happy to have the coveted parking space for the 2026 season. Len defeated me in the last stage of this tournament, but it had a bit of a spin at the end. Regardless of the result, we had a great round, lots of fun and a perfect day for golf. Of course I am a bit disappointed to lose in the final again, but unfortunately I lost a great champion. Interesting is that this story is more.
To be clear, len is a strong golfer who understands how you can play a great golf round strategically. He is a long batter with a strong short game. This is the second time that I lost to Len this year in a final of a tournament, so it was not a ranger he walked away as a club champion. Aside, Len and I work together for a senior 2 -person who is climbing on Osprey on the left today. It should be nice and hopefully we will get the winner circle this year.
The nice aspect of the last round of this year is that I decided to play with my Hickory sticks in the final round. I play in the 2025 Ontario Open Hickory Golf Championship In just over a week and I had to use my hickories during a round that had added pressure. Well, this round was definitely the one who tried them and I learned a lot from my experience.
First I played from the whites at a distance of 6050 meters. This is a piece for my game, because I consistently hit the Green in the middle to long irons. I was able to get close to most photos, leaving very few opportunities for Birdie. I felt that I got the ball reasonably well, but I couldn’t match Len’s strength. I knew this I entered the competition.
Secondly, I was able to find out my iron distances a little better. I still have a way to go. Every time I use my hickories, I learn more about how I can play them effectively. I intend to use them more this week and make an effort to go to zero how every club plays.
Finally, I have to draw more. I missed many short puts to halve a hole. This is atypical for my game and hopefully my putter will get warm in a week during the Open Event. It was not a real problem with my battle, only with my speed and distance control. More time on the exercise Green will certainly help with my short game.
Playing in the last match of the club championship with my Hickory Sticks was a controversial decision. I don’t regret it because I had a great time. Len is a great player and showed why he deserved to become the club champion. We both played the last four holes with hickories and Len enjoyed playing. He got the ball far (of course), however, accuracy was a challenge of the tee. I am convinced that if len played a little more with my Hickory sticks, he would rectify his quirky shots.
The club championship in the Mattawa Golf and Ski Resort is over for another year. I want to congratulate the winning of the championship. He will enjoy the parking lot for the 2026 season, but he knows that many of us will try to fire him next year!
I am a grateful golfer! See you on the links!
