Several former IU basketball players are having strong seasons across the country this winter. Three former Hoosiers play for Big Ten programs.
Here’s an updated look at how each former scholarship player is performing for the Hoosiers as the regular season reaches its final stretch:
Caleb Banks, DePaul
Team record and KenPom rankings: 13-12, No. 113
Banks has started 10 of the 25 games he has played in for the Blue Demons. He averages 6.1 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.5 assists in 17 minutes per game.
The Hampton, Georgia native is shooting 44 percent from the field, 35.8 percent on 3s and 75.5 percent from the free throw line. He scored in double figures five times, including a season-high 19 points and 10 rebounds in a loss to St. John’s on December 16.
Canaan Carlyle, Florida Atlantic Ocean
Team record and KenPom rankings: 14-12, No. 116
Carlyle has missed five games this season, including three of the last five, due to a calf injury. The 6-foot-2 junior from Atlanta has started 20 of the 21 games he has played in and is averaging 14 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 30.5 minutes per game.
The former four-star recruit is shooting 41.7 percent from the field, 32.1 percent on 3s and 88.9 percent from the free throw line. Carlyle has three KenPom Game MVPs this season and four games with 21 or more points.
Gabe Cupps, Ohio State
Team record and KenPom rankings: 17-9, No. 37
The former Ohio Mr. Basketball is averaging 13 minutes per game for the Buckeyes, but his statistical production remains poor.
Cupps is averaging just 1.7 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 35.3 percent from the field, 21.1 percent on 3s and 82.4 percent from the line. Cupps has not scored more than nine points in a game this season.
Logan Duncomb, Winthrop
Team record and KenPom rankings: 19-8, No. 132
Duncomb has been Winthrop’s best player all season, averaging 18.6 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 25.4 minutes per game. He is shooting 60.1 percent from the field and 72.6 percent from the line.
The 6-foot-4 big man from Cincinnati has earned KenPom Game MVP honors nine times and scored a career-high 38 points against Presbyterian on Jan. 24. Duncomb has 10 double-doubles.
C.J. Gunn, DePaul
Team record and KenPom rankings: 13-12, No. 113
The Indianapolis native is averaging a career-high 13.8 points in 27.8 minutes per game for the Blue Demons. He is also averaging 3.6 rebounds, two assists and 1.1 steals while shooting 42.3 percent from the field. Gunn hits 45-of-130 on three-pointers, good for 34.6 percent.
His best game this season was an 80-75 win against Marquette on Jan. 16. Gunn scored 31 points and made seven of his 13 three-point attempts. He has earned KenPom Game MVP honors four times this season and has scored in double figures in 16 games.
Dallas James, Morgan State
Team record and KenPom rankings: 10-14, No. 352
The 7-foot-1 big man plays just 6.5 minutes per game for the Bears, one of the worst teams in Division I.
James is averaging 1.5 points and 1.6 rebounds while shooting 45.8 percent from the floor.
Mackenzie Conference, Texas A&M
Team record and KenPom rankings: 17-8, No. 53
Mgbako played just seven games for the Aggies this season before suffering a season-ending foot injury that required surgery.
Assuming he returns to college next season, he will be a redshirt junior with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Jakai Newton, State of Georgia
Team record and KenPom rankings: 9-18, No. 293
Newton played in 21 games for the Panthers this season, making six starts. He is averaging 7.2 points and 3.6 rebounds in 17 minutes.
Newton is shooting 33.3 percent from the field, 26.2 percent on 3s and 82.1 percent from the free throw line. He scored in double figures seven times.
Malik Reneau, Miami (FL)
Team record and KenPom rankings: 21-5, No. 40
Reneau, a 6-foot-1 senior, is enjoying a stellar senior season in his hometown of Miami. The left-hander is averaging 19.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 28.3 minutes per game.
He is shooting 56.4 percent from the field, 35.1 percent on 3s and 77.9 percent from the free throw line. Reneau has seven double-doubles, 15 games of 20 or more points and eight KenPom Game MVPs.
Myles Rice, Maryland
Team record and KenPom rankings: 10-15, No. 134
Rice hasn’t played in the last four games and the only way to characterize his season is disastrous. It will be a shock if Rice returns to Maryland and does not enter the transfer portal again.
In 17 games for the Terps, he is averaging 5.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists. He plays 16.5 minutes per game and shoots 36.6 percent from the field, 34.4 percent on 3s and 92.6 percent from the free-throw line.
Bryson Tucker, Washington
Team record and KenPom rankings: 13-13, No. 46
The former McDonald’s All-American has started 13 of the 19 games he has played for the Huskies, one of the most disappointing teams in the Big Ten.
Tucker is averaging 6.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 0.5 assists in 23.3 minutes per game. He is shooting 43.9 percent from the field, 27.3 percent on 3s and 54.5 percent from the free throw line. Tucker scored in double figures six times.
