For as long as Philadelphia 76ers fans can remember, superstar Joel Embiid has led the Sixers and established himself as perhaps one of the most dominant centers of all time. However, given the state of his effectiveness on defense – as Andre Drummond rolls back the years with a string of impressive performances – the Sixers should consider moving the latter into a starting role while strategically selecting Embiid’s matchups.
Lately, the Sixers and minor limitations seem to go hand-in-hand, something Embiid is becoming very familiar with as Philadelphia tries to manage his ongoing knee issues. With a majority of his minutes coming in the first half of games, the 2023 MVP battles with the superior players on opponents’ rosters – something that keeps him from discovering his devastating rhythm.
In his sporadic appearances this season, Embiid is averaging 18.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting 40.7% from the floor. These numbers represent the lows in all three categories. Furthermore, in defense, Embiid has shown a shell of his former self due to his limited physical output.
Drummond’s dominant defensive displays could benefit Embiid
By comparison, Andre Drummond returned to Philadelphia in the preseason with a monumental point to prove after his disappointing return to the franchise during the 2024-2025 season. In which the veteran was limited to 40 appearances as the Sixers’ season plummeted to embarrassing depths.
Nevertheless, Drummond, with a revitalized figure, has rediscovered his intimidating status in the paint the 76ers thought they had at their disposal when they acquired the center in 2024. This season, he is averaging 7.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game in about 21 minutes on the court.
Despite not providing the same offensive contributions as Embiid, Drummond has provided a more resilient figure on defense, allowing the likes of Tyrese Maxey to elevate his level of performance to a caliber that many didn’t think was possible.
Currently, the 76ers are ranked sixth in the Eastern Conference standings with a 13–10 record. The franchise cannot accept another campaign that ends without a postseason campaign. Regaining his offensive prowess and mobility will be essential if the Sixers are to achieve any kind of success, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of a playoff spot.
Philadelphia head coach Nick Nurse needs to be more strategic with the minutes Embiid uses during games. Confidence is key when it comes to top sport; a former MVP is no different. If Nurse can align Embiid’s minutes when the opponent uses a weaker rotation, it will not only help the player’s confidence but also make Philadelphia a more threatening foe in the long run.
It could be a move that will anger Philadelphia’s fan base; However, due to the vital defensive effort that the resurgent Andre Drummond provides to his team when he is in the rotation and the reduced level of efficiency that Joel Embiid exhibits, the 76ers should reconsider which center deserves a spot in the starting five.
