There is so much I love about traveling! On the other hand, it may sound harsh to hate things related to travel, but as we all know, life presents various contradictions, big and small. So here it is, my list of (some of) the things I like and dislike about traveling.
A list of things I like and dislike about traveling
Love!
- Hotel breakfast: Can book a hotel stay for breakfast only.
- The thrill of travel planning: Butterflies in my stomach like a newly in love teenager, the feeling when I’m daydreaming while planning a trip is about the same.
- The feeling of being on the road somewhere else: Anticipation at its best.
- The moment when the perfect family balance is created: I can close my eyes and relive some of those memories that have etched themselves. The feeling of total harmony when you travel together as a family. Suddenly it happens!
- To start placing the “travel puzzle”: The puzzle pieces consist of all those moments, places and encounters that take place in a new place. After a while, I start to put those pieces into my own very personal little travel puzzle. My perception of the place, my experiences and encounters, my version of this place on earth. Mine and no one else’s.
Hate!

- The disaster thoughts: You probably wouldn’t believe me if I told you all the scenarios I can think of while traveling. Safe to say I hate them! Read more: Afraid to travel – about catastrophic thoughts and worries
- German towels: I saw two professionals here in Thailand earlier today who had occupied two loungers in one of the places we usually hang out. I think it took 2.5 hours for the couple in question to show up and claim “their” seats, which were covered with towels, large clothespins, and rocks so the towels wouldn’t blow away. I was a millisecond away from collecting their stuff and throwing it in the trash. Hate German towels. Hate!
- Crazy traffic: This applies to blind taxi drivers/drivers/boat captains who don’t seem to mind putting themselves and their passengers in immediate danger, but also to ‘normal’ traffic chaos in general. It always causes me so much stress.
- Pickpockets and dishonest people in general: Imagine how hard it must be to tell yours from mine!
- Misunderstandings due to poor research and control: Unfortunately, most of the time I have no one to blame but myself. Last year I really got the time completely wrong, which led to some unnecessary (and expensive) misunderstandings in the direction of travel. I hate having no idea!
