A graceful park slope Brownstone asks $3.995 million

This Park Slope single-family home is a brownstone with an ornate exterior and beautiful interior details, including mantels, stained glass, and wood floors. It is located at 552 4th Street in the Park Slope Historic District, just around the corner from Prospect Park.

The row houses that fill this block of 4th Street have a beautiful variety of decorations; many were designed by the same architect. Owner Otto Singer built the rows on either side of the block starting about 1907, according to the designation report, in collaboration with architect Arthur Koch. Documents show that Singer continued to submit plans for buildings in this row until about 7 p.m at least 1909. Suzanne Spellen of Brownstoner described it as “one of the most stylish blocks in Park Slope” thanks to the architect’s skillful use of ornament.

This 17-foot-wide brownstone has the kitchen in a rear extension of the living room floor, two floors of sleeping space and a finished basement with a home office, laundry and storage.

Wooden floors run throughout most rooms, and the walls and trim are largely white. At the living room level there are wall mouldings, stained glass, paneling and some unpainted woodwork. A column mantle has a green tiled border.

The ceiling details can still be seen in the back room dining room other houses in line. There is also a decorative mantelpiece, but the fireplace was closed.

In the extension with a window at the rear, the kitchen is compact. There is tile flooring, wood cabinets and stainless steel appliances. There is a half bath and access to the backyard.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms per floor, bedrooms at the front and rear with a bathroom in between. One bedroom features curved built-in cupboards for storage either side of an original mantelpiece with tiled surround.

The house has three full bathrooms with decidedly different color schemes. On the top floor there are some remains of an Art Deco redesign with black and white tiles and a built-in shower. The second floor bath has a more recent upgrade with an open shower and blue subway tile. In the finished basement there is an explosion of color. Multicolored tiles fill the walls and surround the bath.

The tiled terrace has planting beds, seating area and containers.

The house has not been on the market for decades. Corcoran’s Jackie Torren and Charlie Pigott are priced at $3.995 million. What do you think?
