Northampton boss Kevin Nolan has praised the efforts of Cameron McGeehan after the midfielder played with two broken ribs.

Northampton Town star Cameron McGeehan was set to start on the bench against his former club Luton Town.

Instead, the 30-year-old ended up playing the full 90 minutes of the match, which the Cobblers would lose 1-0.

Boss Kevin Nolan stated how well McGeehan had done during his interview BBC Radio Northamptonsaying:

“He’s done a fantastic job. It’s a credit to him and the professionalism he shows, that he can do 90 minutes,” Nolan said.

“He played in a number of positions, he was here, there and everywhere, but I have a good team, which is fair, and I like that.”

The midfielder suffered the injury in Northampton Town’s League One match with Port Vale. McGeehan was due to play in the team’s next match against Walsall in the EFL Trophy but was taken off after 45 minutes.

Since joining the Cobblers in the summer of 2024, McGeehan has made 54 appearances for the League One club.

Despite the loss to Luton Town, McGeehan’s professionalism was one of many positives as Northampton had their largest home attendance in 38 years. Sixfields welcomed 8,029 spectators as the club continued to make improvements not only on the pitch, but off it too.

Cameron McGeehan’s importance to Northampton Town

Since joining Northampton Town, McGeehan was one of the team’s most important players and remained so under Nolan.

Last season the midfielder scored ten times in League One, helping the Cobblers to a 19th-place finish and another year in the division.

With the option of playing in the front three or any position in midfield, McGeehan joins the likes of long-serving Sam Hoskins, who is one of the first names on the team list.

This season he has mainly played in his natural role in central midfield, continuing his form for Northampton. In eleven League One games, McGeehan scored twice, including a 1-0 victory over Blackpool for the winner.

Which games could Cameron McGeehan miss?

How long McGeehan will be absent at this time is unknown as the player could be available again next week.

Nolan’s side will play League Two side Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup this weekend, with the Northampton Town boss likely to rest some of his key players for the match.

The Cobblers return to League One action next week and will be hoping to end their two-match losing streak in the League at home against Mansfield Town.

They then host an EFL Trophy clash with Shrewsbury Town, before back-to-back games against promotion chasers Barnsley and Cardiff City.
