Here at TopSpeed we celebrate all the things that celebrate automotive. But everything that runs on gasoline (and electricity) runs a not insignificant risk of not igniting that fuel for propulsion, but you know, like a bomb. A new NHTSA red group campaign only warns against that very, very serious danger, and up to no fewer than 200,000 cars made by BMW and, in turn, Toyota, because of the overlap in parts supplied on the Z4 sports car and Toyota Supra. Here is the Skinny, and why drivers of 2 -series, 3 series, 5 -series and X3 crossovers should pay attention, pronto!
The consequences for the cars
The BMWs are influenced here. You will notice that this is a very broad recall, which influences sedans of smaller 2 -series and 3 series, and also X3 and X4 Crossovers.

The fine (r) print
We read in more detail on the recall of Nhtsa. It’s alarming. This recall influences a maximum of 80,318 330i Sedans that will be sold between 2019-21. The recall comprises 9,618 4 -series coupes and 9,621 430i convertibles. The recall is not that wide for X4 crossovers. NHTSA suspects only 6,716 of them threatens to grasp the fire. But NHTSA calls on no less than 70,887 x3 sdrive30i and x3 xDrive30i models. BMW 5 series is also hit on the melody of more than 20,000 cars.
The Z4 has been recalled for an amount of 4,539 cars, while the number of Supra is relatively light, at only 1,469 units. There is exactly An Non-Golden ticket owner of a 230i hit by this recall, according to NHTSA. That is a serious pity.
The benign or serious consequences
According to NHTSA, the core of the issue can be benign. It can also be deadly. This is what the language of NHTSA has to say. Don’t worry. We will translate the bureaucratic lingo:
“This safety recovery comprises the motor starter. In some cases, water can contact the electric relay of the starter and lead to corrosion over time.” –NHTSA -Defect / Non -Dealing description
That first bit describes corrosion, which in turn can lead to a broken starter. That would stink because you would be stranded with a car that will not start. But NHTSA also warned of a “… safety risk, including crash, fire, death, [and] damage. “Because corrosion can …
“… also leads to a short circuit and possible overheating of the starter. In an extreme case, this can cause a thermal event during the tool work or when the vehicle is parked and the inflammation is disabled.”-NHTSA Defect / non-Naliance description
Translation: Whether you walk or are static in your garage, your BMW or Toyota can catch fire. That is a lot worse than asking an Uber because your BMW will not start. That is burning-house-down terrible.
BMW’s Kernautos have hit
According to NHTA’s head count, the majority of the affected models are both the 3 and 5 series Sedans and the X3. While other points of sale report that this is primarily a recall on BMW (and Toyota) sports cars, the small print shows much greater impact if you control BMW sedance or the X3. This is really the bread and butter from BMW, and owners of sports cars will probably feel this recall less.
What should I do?
First, don’t panic. Check the table above for the model and years of BMWs. If you are completely worried, NHTSA advises the following:
Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall is completed. ” – Nhtsa Safety Recall Report
Secondly, in the reply from BMW to NHTSA, they will inform all affected owners on November 14 this year – although that recall will probably happen earlier, because dealers will receive replacement parts to tackle the wiring corrosion. Owners are informed of BMW per e -mail. If the starter of your car had already been hit, probably because the car was not driven, BMW will reimburse you for those costs.
Take top speeds
In addition to parking outside, BMW owners can also call BMW customer service on 1-800-525-7417. You may not get the full satisfaction, because BMW does not yet have the parts they need for this repair, and although you can search for the vehicle identification number of your car (VIN) Nhtsa.govThe specific affected cars will only populate the website on November 13, 2025.
