76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe is quietly rewriting the scouting report on him

And just like that, the win streak continues for the Philadelphia 76ers. Fresh off an impressive win at home against the mighty Orlando Magic, the team has now collected three consecutive dubs to start their campaign. At the time of writing, they are one of only four undefeated teams left, so it’s fair to say they’re off to a good start.

As usual, Tyrese Maxey led the way in scoring, finishing the night with a game-high 43 points to go along with eight assists. He wasn’t the only standout, however, as rookie guard VJ Edgecombe continued his sensational start to his freshman campaign, finishing the outing with 26 markers and seven dimes.

At this point we’re all just in awe of Maxey’s brilliance, which is to be expected by now. So it’s probably a good time to talk about Edgecombe, who has undoubtedly been the best rookie in the league – and it’s not even close.

Of course, Edgecombe is as good as advertised as a goalscorer. Coming out of Baylor, he was widely regarded as perhaps the most NBA-ready prospect when it comes to putting the ball in the hoop. But that said, he has already managed to broaden the base of his game, changing scouting reports from the start.

Positional play was not necessarily Edgecombe’s calling card, but that now seems to be a thing of the past. Through three games, he has averaged six assists per game, which leads all rookies to date.

Opposing defenses now have to be wary not only of his scoring ability, but also of his table setting. He quickly became adept at exploiting his rim driving to generate passing angles and open shots for his teammates, so he certainly delivered on his promise to be a more versatile player for the team.

The season is still young, but if this continues, nothing can stop Edgecombe from walking away with the Rookie of the Year award. Of course, the likes of Dylan Harper and even the struggling Cooper Flagg still have something to say about that, but given the 76ers’ momentum, it’s probably VJ’s price to lose even at this point.

And it’s all thanks to Edgecombe exceeding all expectations. Not only is he ready for the NBA, but his sheer maturity has made him even more valuable than people initially thought. That should be an exciting reflection of the present and a look into the future for the 76ers.
