The Philadelphia 76ers, like the rest of the league, are starting to inch closer to trade season, which unofficially begins in less than a week when trade restrictions will be lifted on almost all players signed this summer. Soon, the front office could begin high-profile conversations with other teams about potential trades.
Recently, a rumor emerged from NBA insider Jake Fischer that the Pelicans have listened to trade offers for Trey Murphy III and Herb Jones, two of the most sought-after players in the league who also profile as perfect with the 76ers. Unfortunately, that seems to have quickly reached an impasse.
According to Pelicans insider Shamit Dua, New Orleans has not had any conversations with teams involving Murphy, Jones or even Zion Williamson. That essentially disproves Fischer’s claim, which in turn rids the trade market of two prospects who would have drawn a lot of interest from teams in the playoffs.

Murphy and Jones are two players it’s easiest to imagine fitting right into the 76ers’ collective dynamic, though the same could be said for any other team. That’s what makes them such highly sought-after commodities, so it’s certainly a shame that they’re not available to take with you.
A rangy forward who can hit from anywhere, Murphy is one of the league’s best spot-up shooters at high volume. At 6-foot-1, he has great size for his position, and with the 76ers desperately needing forwards, he would have been perfect.
Ditto for Jones who, while not of the same ilk as Murphy, is much sharper on the less glamorous side of the floor. He’s a great defender who can guard multiple positions, and his offensive game isn’t shabby either.
The 76ers, still in desperate need of help at the forward positions with Paul George still questionable and Kelly Oubre Jr. and Trendon Watford were out due to their respective injuries could have come back to haunt them.
Instead, the front office will now have to scour the market for other forwards who can help them on both ends and make the roster a little more balanced. Of course, there is still a lot of time before the deadline, so hopefully the 76ers can make the right moves that can raise their ceiling.
