The Philadelphia 76ers have won their first two games to start the season, which is a great sign all things considered. Despite the team still having a handful of key players out due to injuries, they managed to squeeze out a number of dubs to start their campaign on a good note. That should at least be reassuring.
But beyond what’s happening on the hardwood, the 76ers have some burgeoning issues off the field that they’ll have to deal with whether they like it or not – and it all starts with the front office. Daryl Morey and his team have become quite suspenseful for the most part, and while there are some notable moves on their part, the bad outweigh the positives.
The old director in particular should already be on the hot seat. He has made far too many moves that make little to no sense for the team, and worse, he has regressed from a sensible mindset when it comes to making decisions for the supposed betterment of the team.
The 76ers should seriously consider moving on from Daryl Morey
It was Daryl Morey’s main idea to further double down on the team’s name chase from last year, which is exactly why they were able to bring in Paul George at the time. However, the 76ers didn’t just grab him, they went a step further and gave him a max contract.
Now, that movement is as old as milk. George is at risk of running injuries and has yet to play this season. There’s also the indisputable fact that he’s in seemingly permanent decline, which isn’t surprising given his age.
There’s also the decision to extend Joel Embiid in a new mega deal. While the former MVP takes credit for justifying such a lucrative investment, it was nevertheless a short-sighted choice by the front office. Embiid was already injured when they handed him that deal, but there was no hesitation on their part to move forward with that risky pick.
Of course, his counter-intuitive decision to re-sign players like Eric Gordon and Kyle Lowry after stating a few months earlier that the team would like to get younger also drew a lot of ridicule from fans, and rightly so.
Now, it was under Morey that the 76ers drafted players like Jared McCain and VJ Edgecombe, but he can’t take sole credit for those moves. There was a certain amount of luck involved.
The 76ers should start thinking about saying goodbye with Daryl Morey. He has long been an innovative scheduling engineer, but almost everyone has overtaken him in that area. And so far there are many more reasons to cut ties with him than to expand this collaboration.
