From Amir Johnson and Al Horford to Dwight Howard and Paul Reed, many players have been given the task of being the back -up center of Joel Embiid during his career at the Philadelphia 76ers. It is a difficult place to fill, and hard to say whether a player is really “successful”, but only one player has been brought back to resume the role.
Andre Drummond is about to start his 14th NBA season, and for the third time in his career he starts the year in the Philadelphia 76ers selection. The first time came in his age-2 season, but he was traded in the Ben Simmons-James Harden Swap in the middle season.
Now Drummond 32 and it looks ready to start the 2025-26 season as a backup of Embiid about less experienced Bigs such as new addition Trendon Watford, Rookie Johni Broome or second-year player Breath Bona.
The Drummond that the 76ers get is not the Drummond van Weleer, which was remarkably usable in his first Stint as a backup of Embiid in 2021-22. Although he still gets his eight rebounds a game, he has lost a step over the years and his ability to maintain his role in the team comes to doubt.
It’s time for the 76 people to continue from Andre Drummond
Last season, in the 40 games he played for Philadelphia, he wore a career-slechtste -3.2 BPM (box +/-). He also missed the time due to injuries on his toe and ankle.
This question is increasing in the months of April and May, when everything on the field is tighter and every bucket is much more elusive. Sixers -fans know all too well the pain of not having a stop gap for the vacuum left behind by Embiid’s short absence on the couch in the late season.
In Game 7 of the 2019 series against the Toronto Raptors, famous for the game winner of Kawhi, Embiid was 45 minutes and 12 seconds on the field, with Greg Monroe as a backup. In 1:41 of the playing time, Monroe was a -9 in a game that was decided on a buzzer beater.
This has been a repeated problem in the play -offs, because Philadelphia is unable to stop bleeding when Embiid gets off the field. He is a +321 in 59 Playoff games for career and is only negatively finished in 19 of those games. With a non-reflective 29-30 Playoff plate, a pattern starts to arise.
If the valued signs of the decline of Drummond appear to be where, the Sixers leaves spring with a question mark at the backup center position.
One possibility lies in the progress of the development of breath Bona in his second season. As Rookie, Bona flashed in limited minutes, an average of 5.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game and with an impressive block percentage of 7.5 percent. For context, this is the second highest percentage of last season among players with more than 800 minutes, just behind Victor Wembanyama, Chet Holmgren and Donovan Clingan.
Embiid is on the wrong side of 30, so the amount of backups that are in his career can probably be counted on one hand. An answer to the position is not clear, but it will probably not be found in Drummond.
