Rachel Burrows, from Macclesfield, is on a cruise to Hawaii and has told how ‘scary sirens’ began to sound before holidaymakers had to walk back to their ship frantically
British holidaymakers have told about “scary sirens” and “emergency warnings” while they went back to their cruise ship after fear of a tsunami in Hawaii.
A tsunami hit coastal areas of the Russian Kuril Islands and the large northern island of Hokkaido in Japan after a powerful earthquake of 8.8 magnitude that was hit off the coast of Russia on Wednesday. Warnings are also present for Alaska, Hawaii and other coasts to the south to Nieuw -Zeeland. The Japanese meteorological desk said that a tsunami was detected as high as 2ft when the waves went south along the Pacific coast from Hokkaido to Tokyo Bay. Civil servants insisted on caution and said that larger waves could come later.
Sirenes scolded in Honolulu because residents were encouraged to have a higher site. “Urgent action must be taken to protect lives and property,” the warning explained. It comes after Girl, 3, was found dead on a popular tourist beach of Greece by a shocked passer -by.

And Rachel Burrows, from Macclesfield, is one of the tourists who are in the panic who have been to the island on a cruise ship. They rushed back to the ship that left for safer waters – only 600 holidaymakers were left in the emergency situation.
She told BBC Breakfast: “We were on a tour around the volcanic area of the big island. Towards the end of the Tour, because we were happy on our way to the cruise ship, we began to get emergency warnings on our phones. The first was ‘Tsunami that you are in danger, you have to get away from the coast to higher ground’.”
She told how they started to realize how dangerous the situation was. She said: “We started to get more by saying that the tsunami would hit.
“He would stop at a chocolate factory that is famous on the island. While we stopped, the traffic on the island that he said was unusual became. As we stopped at the factory, the shop owner said we should go.”
And she added: “It was pretty scary because all the sirens started to go in the area. We got out of the tour bus and everyone walked on the cruise ship because we had to go to the sea.
“Fortunately we were some of the last to get on the cruise ship. Then we could see many other people drop off and stand in line, but they didn’t get it. They were then told that they had to come to higher ground on the coast.”
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said that data from Midway Atoll, which is part of the road between Japan and Hawaii, Tsunami waves measured from peak to trough of 6ft.
He said waves that Hawaii got bigger or smaller and it was too early to tell how big they would be. A tsunami of that size would be related to a 3ft wave that drives on top of the surf, he said.
He said that a wave of that size could move cars and throw fences. “It can loosen trees, that’s why you can’t just be there. The impact is at great speed,” said Green. “Every structure that comes loose and touches that the individual can take them out. And people can easily drown with the power of that kind of Golf.”
Green said that Black Hawk helicopters were activated and that flood vehicles were ready to go in the event that authorities have to save people. “But please don’t put yourself in danger,” he said.
