60 minutes wins Defamation Case | TV tonight

Nine has won a controversial defamation that was set against it by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Munjed Al Muderis.

Nine defended the claims as true or otherwise protected as journalism in the public interest.

“I accept proof of the journalists … that they each had a subjective conviction that the publications were in the public interest,” said Justice Wendy Abraham in handing out her judgment.

“The positive reporting in the media that his practice had enjoyed was necessary to correct, and that the investigation revealed a different side of his practice.”

This case was one of the first tests of a defense of the public interest for reporting.

A Nine Spokesperson said: “Nine’s victory today based on public interest is an important moment in the Australian Defamation Legal Law. We will always be behind our journalism.”
