Southampton have ‘looked at’ Brendan Rodgers in their search for a new boss, according to a report from TEAMtalk.
Southampton turned to Will Still in the summer as they looked to bounce back from a disastrous 2024/25 season. The highly rated young boss gained a strong reputation after success in France.
However, fast forward five months and the Saints are 21st in the league table and are on a three-game losing streak. It has seen Still relieved of his dutiesand the club is considering replacement options.
Russell Martin is being touted as a contender with a new report coming out TEAMtalk repeats this. Intriguingly, they also claim that Brendan Rodgers has been ‘watched’ by Southampton.
Rodgers, 52, is out of work after leaving Celtic last week. He boasts a fine track record from his time in the Scottish Premier League and has also found success south of the border with Swansea City, Liverpool and Leicester City.
Could Brendan Rodgers take over the Southampton job?
In recent times, Southampton has made it as high as European football. They regularly challenged for such places at their peak in the Premier League, producing some top players and recruiting well too.
Now that they are in the lower reaches of the Championship table, the Saints’ regression is a real concern. Sport Republic has been the subject of growing vitriol from the St. Mary’s faithful, with the club far from the attractive home they once were.
It means landing someone like Brendan Rodgers is highly unlikely. The level of the Scottish Premier League is the subject of criticism, but the Northern Irishman has now dominated that division with Celtic for two seasons. He won silverware and also reached Europe in his four years at Leicester City.
Rodgers will likely have his sights set on a return to the dugout at a much higher level than the Saints can currently offer, and rightly so.

The task that awaits the next Southampton boss
The next Southampton boss has a big job to do. There is still time to salvage something from this season, but the impact must be immediate.
There is talent within this team to do much better than before, hence the call to fire Still. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t other figures to blame.
The off-field decline has been notable, and Sport Republic must re-examine their structure and appointments in off-field roles if the Saints are to return to their previous heights. If not, expect the protests against their property to only increase.
Amid this, the next boss must fight to unite the club, the team and the fans once again in a bid to turn this season around.
