While we look at the Ryder Cup, you have probably confronted players with a number of hard conditions, including a long golf course with narrow fairways and some real rough in New York style.
Although your home course rough may not be as extreme as what they have at Bethpage Black, you still have to know how to deal with yourself if you are roughly. Here is how you can find success if you are in the knots rough.
1. Assess the lie
Not all lies in the rough are the same. You may be in a long grass, but you still have a clean look at the ball – some golfers even prefer a tight fairway Lie.
If the ball is on the grass, you can often treat it as a normal shot. But when the ball starts to sink in the rough, it’s time to assess:
- Can you see half the ball?
- A third of the ball?
- Hardly one of there?
The less of the ball you can see, the more you need to adjust your setup and swing.
If you try to make a standard fluctuation of a buried lie, the grass can get between the club surface and the ball, which drastically influences contact, ball flight and distance.
2. Tilt your shoulders to the target
Adjust your arrangement so that your lead shoulder is lower and your trail shoulder is higher – this shifts your breastbone and upper body slightly to the target. This position creates a steeper attack corner, so that the club head neatly hits the back of the ball before he digs in the ground.
Let this setup automatically make the steeper swing. While you tilt forward, your weight must give your head side during the swing, which will help you hit the ball more.
3. You have to hit the ground
When the ball sits down, the urge to ‘help’ it in the air. Instead, you connect to hit the grass.
With the steeper setup, your club must approach the ball on a falling path. Focus on getting dirty – not just brushing the top of the grass.
4. Expect a shorter follow -up
Your steep setup and the forward weight can limit your backswing somewhat, and your sequel can feel shorter than normal. That’s okay. The goal is down-and-through, not a complete finish. Keep your weight and upper body forward to guarantee a fixed contact with the ball in front of the ground.
5. Maybe you need more loft
When you lean forward, your club face is naturally denied. This means that your 7-iron may behave more like a 5-iron.
Consider to prevent this, consider using a more lofted club. A lofted hybrid or fairway wood can also be great options to dig out the ball and get back into play.
