5 good intentions for your golf game in 2026

The new year is just around the corner and that means resolution season. The turn of the calendar to 2026 is a good reason to assess and reflect on the year that was. And once that reflection is complete, you can start making plans for how you can improve over the next twelve months.

If you want to make 2026 a great year on the course, it’s important that you start developing healthy habits for better golf. Below are five resolutions for your golf game to make this your best season yet.

5 resolutions for your golf game

1. Start clubbing

We all want more green regulation, right? Well, the easiest way to do that – without even changing your swing – is to take more clubs.

According to data from Shotscope, average recreational golfers (~15 handicaps) miss the greens short about 54 percent of the time. This is usually the result of poor contact, not knowing their true distances and over-confidence in their abilities.

So, what can you do to fix this? It’s pretty simple: just take more club. Sure, you can occasionally catch a flush and fly over the green, but most of the time the extra club will result in better distance and more greens.

2. Keep your grooves clean

One of the most popular topics among recreational golfers is how to generate more spin with their wedges. The most important thing they can do from the start is to have clean grooves.

If there is dirt and grass in your grooves, the club cannot create friction and spin the ball. So no matter how good your technique is, you won’t generate maximum spin. Keep your grooves clean and creating spin will become much easier.

3. Take a lesson

Golf tips have never been easier to find on social media – and that’s great! But if you want personalized instruction that fits your specific concerns, there is no substitute for taking lessons.

Think of it this way: if you’re feeling sick, you wouldn’t just Google your symptoms and treat yourself based on the search results, right? (Some of you might, but that wouldn’t be advisable in the long run.) The same principle applies when it comes to your golf swing. Your golf coach is like your doctor, and if you really want to get better, you need to get examined by a professional.

4. Get fit for clubs

Getting fit for clubs is another great way to improve. If you have a unique swing that you’ve been playing for years, getting the right equipment can be a game changer. There’s no need to make major swing changes when you can play with clubs optimized for your swing.

That’s not to say that a new driver will automatically let you shoot 350-yard bombs down the fairway (if it did, I’d be playing it already), but a good adjustment can help you straighten out your slice or squeeze a few extra yards out of each club.

5. Go to the gym

With my final decision for you, dear readers, I leave you with this: go to the gym. In 2025, I started becoming more conscious of my physical health, and it paid off on the golf course in ways I didn’t expect.

Best of all, you don’t have to become an idiot to see results in your golf game. All you have to do is exercise a few hours a week and you will see a significant improvement. Check out my story from last year to see how, including a basic training plan from a PGA Tour strength coach.
