Winters have certainly improved since I was a kid growing up in Geneva, New York. Winter then meant putting away my clubs for several months at a time – except for my putter.
While I always recommend planning a winter golf trip to stay motivated, there’s plenty you can do at home to keep your game sharp during the colder months. Below I’ve outlined five ways you can keep rust at bay during the winter.
1. Make exercise a priority
Growing up in the snow belt, putting in the winter was all I had – and that’s probably why putting has always been a strong suit of mine.
Today’s workout mats are much better than what I used as a kid. They’ll have you check your setup, track your shot, make sure your ball rolls from end to end, and work on distance control out to about 10 feet.
Now that we live in Florida, weather isn’t an issue, but we still keep one Perfect putting mat around because it is so useful.

2. Use a mat and net to keep your swing fresh
If you have a garage or small indoor space, a hitting mat and net make for an easy practice setup year-round. The options are endless, and even a compact space is sufficient to work on solid contact and pivot mechanisms. We set up a net in our garage and combined it with a launch monitor to establish wedge distance control during the off season.
3. Train your grip with a preformed training grip
Your grip determines your club face – and ultimately the direction in which your ball starts. But grip changes can feel uncomfortable, making the offseason the ideal time to tackle them.
A contoured training grip allows you to practice proper hand placement without the pressure of hitting shots. Even Scottie Scheffler is known for constantly checking his grip. You can also install a suitable grip on a special practice club and practice swings. Improving your grip often leads to better wrist action and a better ball touch.
4. Check your posture and alignment in a mirror
Winter is the perfect season to work on the basics. Correct posture is crucial for consistent contact, but it is difficult to assess without feedback. With the help of a mirror, you can ensure that your arms hang naturally and that your hands are directly under your shoulders at address. This simple visual checkpoint provides enormous benefits.
5. Build up speed
Everyone wants more distance, but swinging faster will only get you so far without specific training. Winter is the ideal time to build clubhead speed, and the Stack System is one of the best ways to do this. We’ve used it consistently and the over/under speed protocols really work as long as you stick to the program. If more speed is your goal, it’s a worthwhile investment.
