The Calgary Flames could find a crossroads with their best forward in Nazem Kadri. It was recently revealed that the 34-year-old, who is under contract until the 2028/29 season, has a 13-team no-trade clause. That came as a huge surprise to many as it was believed that Kadri’s deal remained a full freedom of movement clause until the end of the 2025-2026 period. Because it has become common knowledge that this is not the case, it has been discussed heavy in trade speculation.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman recently reported on the 32 Thoughts podcast that many teams have inquired with the Flames about Kadri to find out whether or not they are on his no-trade list. Based on that alone, it’s clear that there is a lot of interest in the left center, who could suddenly be moved at or before the trade deadline. If that happens, here are four logical solutions.
Colorado avalanche
Kadri is no stranger to trade speculation, especially since joining the Flames. His name was frequently discussed as a potential trade candidate throughout the 2024-25 season, and one team that continued to be mentioned as a potential destination was the Colorado Avalanche.
Kadri is well known within the Avs organization, having spent three seasons with them, the finals of which were in 2021-2022 when they won the Stanley Cup. That final regular season also saw him record a career-high 87 points despite only playing in 71 games.
The difficulty for the Avs when it comes to reacquiring Kadri is money. The Flames centerman has a $7 million cap hit, and the Avalanche currently have less than $1 million in cap space. That said, if Kadri is indeed available and willing to return, don’t be surprised if general manager (GM) Chris MacFarland does everything he can to make it happen.
Carolina Hurricanes
After years of being criticized for not having a true superstar on their roster, the Carolina Hurricanes, who have been Stanley Cup contenders for several seasons, landed one in Mikko Rantanen midway through the 2024-25 season. Unfortunately, the big Finnish winger didn’t seem eager to sign an extension to stay with the Canes, prompting them to move on from him. in a trade with the Dallas Stars a short time later.
The Hurricanes have been trying to add star power to their lineup before 2025-26. signed by Nikolaj Ehlers to a seven-year extension last season. That said, the 29-year-old was not the difference maker as hoped, as he remained goalless in his first nine appearances. That could be enough for the Canes, who have more than $9 million in cap space, to give Kadri a boost.
Vancouver Canucks
It was clear long before the 2025-26 season started that the Vancouver Canucks needed to improve at center. They were unable to do that this past summer and they are still in dire need of a centreman if they want to make the play-offs. Because of and Filip Chytil suffered injuriesthey currently run Elias Pettersson, Lukas Reichel, Aatu Raty and Max Sasson in the middle.

Kadri would be a great fit on the Canucks’ second line. This has been reported to be the case is not part of his 13-team no-trade listwhich has sparked a lot of speculation that GM Patrik Allvin could be interested in him. They would have to get crafty or perhaps move other players elsewhere with less than $1.5 million in cap space, but if they can figure out a way, there’s no denying he would be a great fit.
Montreal Canadians
Another Canadian team that needs help in the middle and is linked to Kadri are the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs were on fire to start the 2025-26 season as their 16 points from 11 games are currently tied for first place in the NHL standings.

As good as the Canadiens have been thus far, they could really use another top-six centerman to help them become a real contender. Kadri very much is and would likely jump at the chance to join a team that, based on their start, has a great shot at making the playoffs. They currently have $4.5 million in cap space, which could make this trade work if they included a young talent like Kirby Dach as part of their package.
Every team would love to have Kadri
While these four teams would all be a great fit for Kadri, there will be a number of others in the mix to get him if he is truly available. He has been a very solid top-six forward throughout his NHL career and has proven with the Avalanche that he can take his game to an even higher level during the playoffs. Expect his name to come up in many more trade rumors and speculation in the coming weeks.
