The first week of the NHL season 2025-26 is finally here and Elliote Friedman gave a few updates about where things stand for the Calgary Flames in the latest episode of 32 thoughts. In particular the insider notes that the flames are on the market for a goalkeeper.
On the market for a goalkeeper?
It is no secret that the position of the Backup goalkeeper of Calgary Flames has been a problem in the preseason. After having let Vladar walk in the free desk, Craig Conroy Ivan Prosvetov from Russia signed in the hope that he could take over the role behind Dustin Wolf. Unfortunately, Prospetov really struggled in the campaign of the preseason, which led to it affecting exemptions a few days ago and was now in the AHL. The bad news is Devin Cooley has not been better and the flames are now stuck without good options behind Wolf with the season just a few days away.
With several goalkeepers who recently renouncing, this is what Friedman had to say about the function of the FLAMS BACKUP -target defender.
‘I will tell you that a team that is asking people is Calgary. We all know who their number one is, but neither Cooley or Prosvetov had great preseasons. I wonder if Calgary can shoot someone here. It’s just the timing good with what they have? “
Some of the more striking names that are currently available if the Flames want to add a new backup are Michael Dipietro, Kaapo Kahkonen, Nico Daws and Mads Sogaard. All four the above names have more NHL experience than Prosvetov and Cooley and can be upgrades behind Wolf. If the flames indeed claim a goalkeeper today, expect Cooley to be sent to the Wranglers shortly thereafter.
A position in Flux
With both Prosvetov and Cooley who struggle this in a large way this preseason, the Flames are staring a big problem behind Wolf. The team will have to pray that Cooley can bounce back and shake off a rough pre -season, or hope to add a new goalkeeper.
