Sheffield Wednesday declined to sign Duncan Watmore this summer but could now reconsider that deal while Watmore trains with League One Stockport County, according to Alan Nixon.

Sheffield Wednesday’s directors have taken a major step in their quest for financial stability, paying off a number of outstanding debts and seeing transfer restrictions imposed by FIFA lifted. It represents a crucial step forward as the club works to rebuild after a turbulent period.

The debts were paid with money generated by a surge in support from supporters, with increased attendance at Hillsborough and strong club store sales proving crucial. This progress follows Dejphon Chansiri’s decision place the club under managementending his 10-year reign and giving fans renewed optimism about that manager Kris Wigfield could soon secure a new buyer.

Wednesday has now received another major boost, with the EFL granting approval for the club to sign free agents. SWFC are allowed to add two free agents to strengthen their roster, and one appears to be getting close.

One of those free signings could be Duncan Watmore after a move for him fell through in the summer. According to Alan Nixon via his PatreonWatmore is currently training with League toppers Stockport County as he awaits an offer from SWFC.

Watmore could be a smart pick-up for Sheffield Wednesday

Fitness concerns often arise when signing free agents mid-season, but that shouldn’t be a major problem at Watmore. And even if that were the case, Sheffield Wednesday have little alternative if they want to strengthen their squad.

Watmore should be in better shape than many non-attached players thanks to his pre-season stint with Blackpool, which has allowed him to continue training regularly. He would still need time to get back to full match sharpness, but that will of course develop over time.

With Pedersen’s roster thin, adding a versatile player like Watmore could be extremely helpful. He can operate anywhere in the front three, giving the Danish boss crucial flexibility both in matches and from the bench.

His championship experience is another important asset. Not only does he know the level well, but he has also proven that he can score goals in the division.

Sheffield Wednesday’s hunt for free agents last

One of the two free agent deals that Sheffield Wednesday will make appears to be Liam Cooper. Earlier this week it was reported that SWFC would sign Cooper after the deal collapsed in the summer.

Like Watmore, Cooper would sign for the club before the summer window embargoes. Another free agent linked to Wednesday is Timothy Fosu Mensah.

The versatile defender has been without a club for over a year and previously plays for Manchester United. It is not yet known whether Sheffield Wednesday have made a move for the defender.
