It ended Aston Villa 1 Newcastle 3.
Before each match, we ask one of our writers to come up with three positives and three negatives after the match.
An interesting game at Villapark…
Enough to talk about.
On this occasion it is The Armchair Fan.
POSITIVE
We won!
Objective completed!
Three goals, a win and a place in the last sixteen of the cup.
Every victory is to be savored and dumping a Premier League rival out of the FA Cup, especially away from home, is to be savoured.
This was a good win for Newcastle United, who took full credit for the win after beating a good Villa side all game.
Nick Woltemade
All an out-of-form striker needs is a goal, any goal.
We may have had some luck with the loose pass that gave Willock possession in the box, but Woltemade scored with a great finish that will do him the trick.
The relief was evident in his celebration and hopefully there will be many more goals to come.
Sandro Tonali
Not a bad way to open your account for the season!
With the news that Bruno will be out for a number of weeks, we were looking for some inspiration from midfield and Tonali has more than delivered.
He may have looked a little slower in some games this season, but he was back to his best against Aston Villa as a match winner.
NEGATIVES
VARcian
Come back VAR, all is forgiven!
Have you ever seen more incompetent officials!?
Aston Villa led through a blatant offside goal before the Toon were denied two penalties and a Villa player should have been sent off… and that was just the first half!
Even worse, when a handball in the penalty area was punished with a free kick OUTSIDE the penalty area.
Fortunately, Newcastle United were able to fight against this injustice. but if we had lost, we would have been talking about it for years.
Fixture congestion
I can’t be the only one who thinks the FA Cup exit could have been a blessing in disguise.
We’ve been plagued with fixtures all season, with a run to the League Cup semi-finals, the Champions League play-offs and now the last 16 of the FA Cup.
This promises to be one of our busiest seasons ever, with no interruption to our hectic schedule.
Injuries and suspensions
Following on from the above, the fixture list will certainly test the depth of the squad.
Bruno is now injured and Wissa was also left out of the selection on Saturday after he suffered a blow during training.
During the match, Thiaw, Barnes and Ramsey all received yellow cards.
Injuries and suspensions are the last thing we need!
