On Sunday (September 14) in Scotiabank Saddledome, the Edmonton Oilers Lost 5-4 To the Calgary Flames while the teams complete their home-and-home exhibition series with line-ups consisting of players who went to Rookie Camp.
The Rookie edition of the Battle of Alberta ends in a Sweep for the Flames, which previously defeated the oilers with a score of 6-5 on Rogers Place on Friday (September 12).
But while the Rookies of Edmonton lost on Sunday due to one goal for a second consecutive game, different oilers prohibitions noticed again. On Friday it was Beau Akey, Connor Clattenburg and Matthew Savoie who played heads. Here are three more players who caught our attention in the Rematch:
Nathaniel Day
A high goals against average does not usually result in the fact that one of the three stars of the game is called, but between allowing five goals, Edmonton’s Nathaniel Day made a handful of good stops (shots on goal were not included for the exhibition games, but it is safe to say that day was reasonably busy).
The 20-year-old day was at his best in the earlier part of the game, even though he did not get much defensive help from his teammates. His biggest salvation came when he robbed Calgary’s 2024 First-round Draft Pick Matvei Gridin during an escape in the first period.
This is the third consecutive year that day is perhaps the best little less than Edmonton in the Rookie Camp exhibition game. 184one General Pick In the NHL -Draft from 2023, his junior career concluded at the Flint Firebirds of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) last spring and will probably start this season in the Echl.
Day never had great statistics in the OHL, but he was an absolute workhorse, which led the Canadian Hockey League with 59 games played in 2024-25. In that sense, Sunday’s game was a kind of microcosm of his junior career. On 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds he has the size that NHL teams love.
Tommy Lafreniere
Tommy Lafreniere led attacking for the oilers on Sunday and scored twice in Scotiabank Saddledome.
The 18-year-old attacker gave the visitors their only lead on 1-0 when he opened the score for only a few minutes in the game by making a quick shot along Calgary Netminder Arsenii Sergeev.
Lafreniere came up again, on the Power-Play late in the second period, when his shot bend past Sergeev, making the score 3-2 in favor of Calgary.
“I just try to play in the right way and show the boys in the stands what I can do … There are older boys here and I am excited to learn from them and bring it back to Kamloops this year.”

Lafreniere, a right wing with the Kamsloops blowers of the Western Hockey League, was the first player selected by the Oilers on the NHL design of 2025 in June, taken in the third round with the 83RD General choice. He had a fairly quiet night in the first game between the Rookies of the Oilers and Flames, so his performance on Sunday must have had a few people on the exploration of Edmonton smiling.
“I just try to play in the right way and show the boys in the stands what I can do,” said Lafreniere in an interview after the game. “I am just here to learn, so there are clearly older guys here and I am excited to be here. I try to learn from them and bring it back to Kamloops this year.”
Rhett Pitlick
Rhett Pitlick, 24, is the oldest player in Oilers Rookie Camp, and on Sunday the attacker showed a smart age and experience, while pulling a few punishments on the flames.

As was the case two nights earlier, Pitlick played a well-completed game, supplemented with fast feet and hockey feeling. Although he did not score, Pitlick had an impact by winning fights for possession and moving the puck.
Pitlick is not a candidate to make the season opening of Edmonton NHL schedule. In fact, he is not even under an NHL contract: the 5-foot-10 winger is signed at a deal of the American Hockey League With the Bakersfield Condors and the Rookie camp from Oilers is added to an invitation. But it is difficult to imagine that a team does not like what they saw from Pitlick in these two Rookie exhibition games; Don’t be surprised if he finally brought his way to the NHL.
Also mentioning their output on Sunday are Joshua Samanski and defender Parker von Richter, who scored the third and fourth goals of the oilers respectively.
Edmonton’s Rookie Camp ends on Monday (September 15). A number of prospects will be invited to the main camp, which will start this week. The Oilers open their preseason schedule with a few Split-Squad matches against the Flames, on Rogers Place and Scotiabank Saddledome on September 21.
