While the dog days of the summer drag, hockey fans can do nothing but scream for the opening evening. For fans of the Buffalo Sabres, there is hope that this will finally be the season that the team will again come over the bump and again in the play -off bracket.
Ignoring the rumors about a franchise-changing trade, the focus is on the coming season. There are more than a few things that have to happen to make the Sabres succeed, but these three players will play the biggest roles of all.
Michael Kesselring, D
The trade that Michael Kesselring landed Was not without controversy. Although the move was initially met with Spot, considering how difficult it is to find as a JJ Peterka, the move has won a momentum in Sabres circles.
Kesselring was a highlight for the Utah Hockey Club last season and played the quality of top-four minutes in the light of injuries that decimated the defensive corps. Now he comes to Buffalo with the expectation that he can do the same, while he finally offers a quality partner for Owen Power.
If Kesselring is everything he is invoiced in, the Sabres could quietly have one of the best top-four defensive units in the competition. Team defense has long been a big problem, but Kesselring has the chance to correct many mistakes this coming season.
Jack Quinn, RW
There may be no polarizing figure in the Sabres organization than Jack Quinn. The eighth general choice in 2020, Quinn had the feeling that he is about to be about great things. Incorrect injuries come in and put it back. That said, 2024-25 was another beast.

Quinn ended last season with a terrible 15 goals and 39 points, but there is more to feel good about than you have about. After a really bad first third of the season, Quinn showed life as a playmaker and scorer.
Now undoubtedly recovered from earlier injuries, the hope is that a clean account of health and a little fire under him can see Quinn elevated his play. Many still believe that he has the potential to score 30 goals. Given the infringement in Peterka trade, an outbreak of Quinn would go a long way to make up for that loss.
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, G
It seems that things are never in line for the Sabres. The attack starts, but the struggle and target -living battle. Goal tending appears, but the Power Play dies. Nothing ever seems to synchronize. For Luukkonen it feels like he fell out of synchronous last season.

After a breakout 2023-24 campaign, Luukkonen took a noticeable step back. Towards the end of the season he had lost the runway to veteran James Reimer. The 25-year-old will have another chance to claim the Lion part of Starts again in 2025-26 and must show that he is still the goalkeeper of the present of the Sabres.
When he is busy, Luukkonen has a cool, calm position in the face of pressure. He has been abandoned by team defense in the past, so the hope is that improvements in the selection will help him again find his game in 2025-26.
Make-or-break season
Every low season for the Sabres seems to wear considerable drama. But it is crucial that the Sabes come as close as possible when making the play -offs. It would not only be embarrassing to go a 15one Consecutive season without a play -off appearance, but there is a lot at stake for the schedule.
Another failed play -offs means that there is a very real potential that boys like Alex Tuch, Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin ask to be treated. That can bring the franchise even further, something that they cannot afford. For that reason, it is crucial that these three boys ensure that they become focus points in the coming season.
