Swansea City has confirmed the departure of head coach Alan Sheehan less than seven months into his tenure.
Swansea City have become the latest Championship club to opt for a management change, parting ways with Alan Sheehan on Tuesday afternoon.
It comes as the Swans are 18th in the Championship table. They had won one of their last seven league games and the fans’ calls for change grew louder after last Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Ipswich Town.
But intriguingly, the confirmation of Sheehan’s departure where there is no interim management team. It would indicate that a permanent replacement will be swiftly sought, with the next head coach set to be in charge of the return to action against Bristol City on Saturday, November 22.
It means that a relocation of an unemployed manager is very likely, allowing for a quick appointment. With that in mind, we’ve highlighted three available managers for Swansea City to keep an eye on…
Gary O’Neil
Swansea City could join the fray of Championship clubs reportedly eyeing Gary O’Neil. The former Wolves boss recently rejected a return to Molineux, prompting their move for Rob Edwards from Middlesbrough.
Boro have since been linked with O’Neil, as have managerless Southampton and Norwich City.
It means the Swans may have a tough task ahead of them in winning the race for the 42-year-old. Nevertheless, he would be a smart target, and his availability would allow him to be appointed quickly.
Michael Carrick
Carrick has been out of management since the summer when he was relieved of his duties by Middlesbrough. He led an under-strength Boro team from the lower reaches of the Championship to the play-offs in his first season; something that could really appeal to Swansea City.
He ultimately failed to crack the top six in his next two campaigns, resulting in his dismissal. However, the former Manchester United coach remains highly regarded.
Carrick’s team from Middlesbrough played exciting attacking football. That could go a long way for Swans fans, who became disenchanted with Sheehan’s playing style.

Jon Dahl Tomasson
Last but not least is Jon Dahl Tomasson, who may be tempted to return to club management. After a strong start to his time as Sweden boss, the collapse of the 2026 FIFA World Cup prompted his dismissal.
However, the Dane’s time as boss of Blackburn Rovers should not be forgotten. He worked in far from ideal conditions and under tough conditions, got them playing good football and almost made it to the championship play-offs.
It would be interesting to see if a return to the second level appeals to Tomasson after his international exploits. However, if he were intrigued by such an opportunity, he could be a good fit for Swansea City.
