Nikola Mektic and Rajeev Ram put an end to Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool’s Formidable 22-Match Tour level Winning Streak on the Cincinnati Open on Saturday.
Mektic and RAM have delivered a coupling display to overcome 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) and to reach their first final at tour level in just their third event of the season. With his victory, the Croatian-American duo 188 places has risen to No. 33 in the Pif ATP Live Doubles ranking. They can jump to number 25 with a title in Cincinnati.
Cash and Glasspool, which are number 1 in the ranking of Live Doubles teams and were already eligible for the Nitto ATP Finals, chased their fifth consecutive trophy after success at Queen’s Club, Eastbourne, Wimbledon and Toronto. Despite the semi-final defeat in Cincinnati, Glasspool will rise on Tuesday to a career-high no. 1 in the PIF ATP-double rankings and cash to a personal best world no. 2.
With their victory, Mektic and Ram improved to a 6-3 team record, according to the Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index. In the Cincinnati Championship match they will be confronted with singles star Lorenzo Sonego and Lorenzo Musetti.
Musetti and Sonego kept their courage to collect Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski 4-6, 6-3, 13-11 along the fifth seeds, which convert their sixth match point. In their first final, the Italians have been at tour level since reaching the championship match in Doha last year.
Salisbury and Skupski, who are number 5 in the ranking of PIF ATP Live Doubles teams, go to Winston-Salem, where the best seeds want to strengthen their qualification for the Nitto ATP finals.
