  • The 2027 Ram Power Wagon is now offered with a Cummins diesel engine for the first time.
  • Ram’s diesel is a 6.7-liter inline-six that makes 430 horsepower and 1,075 pound-feet of torque.
  • The new Power Wagon will go on sale in the second half of 2026, with the diesel version starting from $88,470.

For some reason, Ram hasn’t offered its heavy-duty off-road pickup truck with a diesel engine until now. For the 2027 model year, the Power Wagon finally joins its crosstown rivals by giving customers the choice of an oil-burning powerplant. And just like that, Ram can boast about torque in this particular niche, as the Cummins’ 1,075 pound-feet outpaces GM’s Duramax and Ford’s Power Stroke, which produce 975 and 1,050, respectively.

The modern Power Wagon has been around since 2005, so why did it take so damn long to put a diesel in it? Well, as customer demand grew, someone at Ram who said so finally gave the green light to ditch the front-mounted winch. Now that that’s out of the way, engineers can make room for the turbodiesel’s intercooler. Now the truck’s gas-fed 6.4-liter Hemi V-8, which makes 405 horsepower and 429 pound-feet, is joined by the Cummins 6.7-liter inline six-cylinder with 430 horses and the aforementioned massive torque.

The Power Wagon has standard all-wheel drive and the Cummins engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 3.42 rear axle ratio. Ram claims this setup can tow up to nearly 20,000 pounds with the newly available gooseneck hitch on the fifth wheel. The HD off-roader can now also be equipped with a self-levelling rear suspension. As before, it rolls on knobby 35-inch all-terrain tires, and if the 13.2 inches of ground clearance isn’t enough, the Power Wagon’s belly is protected by steel skid plates. Other notable hardware on the truck includes a disconnecting front sway bar for better articulation, as well as electronically locking front and rear diffs.

The Power Wagon’s interior remains spacious and comes standard with a heated front seat. Of course, buyers can opt for a pair of buckets wrapped in leather and equipped with heated and ventilated cushions. Ram also offers a variety of interior options, from a larger 14.5-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen, a passenger-side display, additional leather surfaces and a 17-speaker Harman Kardon stereo.

The new Cummins-powered Ram Power Wagon will hit dealerships sometime in the second half of this year. While the company hasn’t yet released pricing for the rest of the heavy-duty range, nor for the gas-powered Power Wagon, the diesel version of the latter will start at $88,470 – $4,500 more than the current Hemi-powered truck.
