Volvo has officially unveiled the new XC70, which is now open for pre-orders in China (production has already started there) and will be introduced at a later stage in Europe. Recycling a type plate that used it in the past is the newest model from Volvo built on its new scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform and is designed to meet the demand for plug-in-hybriden with a longer distance (also referred to as Range-Extended Plug-in-Hybriden of Rephevs.

The battery feeds a second electric motor that actually drives the front wheels and is assessed on 318 PS (314 hp or 234 kW), making a time of 0-100 km/h eight seconds possible. This variant, known as the ‘two-wheel drive long distance’ when it is translated immediately, offers a CLTC-rated range of 116 km and returns a WLTP-rated fuel consumption of 1.27 liters per 100 km.
In the meantime, the name of the second variant translates directly into ‘four-wheel drive long distance’ and is supplied with a 39.6-kkh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery for more capacity for more electric range at 212 km (CLTC). The (presumably) top-spec option also receives a third electric motor at the rear for four-wheel drive, which brings the total system output to 462 PS (456 hp or 340 kW).
With more growl, the 0-100 km/h time is shortened to 5.3 seconds and the fuel consumption is reduced to 0.98 liters per 100 km (WLTP). This variant also gets an extra off-road drive mode in addition to hybrid, sports and electric.
Carnewschina Reports The XC70 has a turbo engine with 1.5 liter turbocompressor linked to a three-speed gearbox special hybrid transmission (3DHT). The engine products 163 PS (161 hp or 120 kW) and 255 Nm of torque, while the electric motors are assessed at 82 PS (80 hp or 60 kW), 145 PS (143 hp or 107 kW) and 212 PS (209 hp or 156 kW).
Regarding charging, Volvo says that with an AC charger of 7 KW it takes four hours to fully charge the 21.2 kWh battery of 2WD (0-100%), with the 39.6 kWh battery of the 4WD-long distance that seven hours needs.
With DC quickly charging at 87 kW, the 4WD battery can get long distance in approximately 23 minutes from 0-80%. In the meantime, it is 39 minutes before the 2WD -long distance to do the same, although the Volvo disclaimer did not indicate the charger output – we assume that it accepts a lower speed. It is also revealed that both drive lines are based on an electrical architecture of 400 volts and comprises a fuel tank of 60 liters
With regard to prices, the presale figure for the 2WD-long distance in China is 299,900 Yuan (approximately RM177K), while the 4WD long distance is 329,900 Yuan (RM194K). Early birds will also enjoy four benefits for the sale worth more than 20,000 Yuan (RM12K), and there are seven outside colors to choose from.
Positioned between the XC60 and XC90, measures the XC70 4.815 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, 1,650 mm long and has a wheelbase that spans 2,895 mm. The model with five seats offers 408 liters of boot space, expandable to 1,456 liters with the rear seats down.
When mentioning the interior, the XC70 has a simple dashboard design with zero physical controls. Access to the climate system and other vehicle functions is done via a large central touchscreen of 15.4-inch, which is located in a landscape orientation instead of portrait such as in other Volvo models.
Participating in the large infotainment display is a configurable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a head-up display with augmented reality. Other remarkable functions include a Dual-Tier Center console with tactile media administrations, cup holders, a lower covered storage space and wireless charging cushions. Climate control with triple zone with reversing and control panel, a panoramic glass roof, mood lighting themes and a Harman Kardon sound system are also present.
With regard to the exterior, the XC70, the iconic iron mark and diagonal bar of the Swedish brand at the front carries, flanked the hammer from Thor’s hammer that is now separated from the main heads that are continuing – similar to the EM90 Electric MPV.
Along the sides is the window line that runs up to the back a nod to the EX90, while the back is vertically oriented behind lamps from a piece with accompanying light bars that extend in the tailgate.
“The new XC70 is a very attractive choice for customers who want the benefits of electric driving, but are not yet ready to become fully electric. It is a cornerstone of our electrified product portfolio, a bridge to fully electric cars for our customers, and it will strengthen our presence in the world’s largest car market,” said Hakan Samuelsson, President.
