The Toyota Corolla model line does not increase the wrist of a car enthusiast until you add the letters GR. The standard Corolla -Sedan and Hatchback are perfectly adequate cars that offer thousands of buyers reliably and efficiently daily transport, but little excitement. The Corolla Cross came in 2021 and combined the boring but dependent attitude of the Corolla with a larger crossover body and the most importantly raised seating position that modern buyers demand. Again, it didn’t raise any pulse, but it has served almost 300,000 uninspired drivers very well.
Toyota gave the utilitarian gas only Corolla a subtle renewal for 2026, with a revised pre-grid that Toyota says it is more robust, while the hybrid gets a strange body-colored grid, and both get a larger optional infotainment screen, new wheel options and a new paint color. It is not chic or particularly impressive, but these updates should help the Corolla to be better confronted with its heavy competition such as my favorite, the Subaru Crosstrek, or the Hyundai Kona, Chevrolet Trax and Honda HR-V.
Complete disclosure: Toyota flew me to Sonoma to taste its exciting GR model setup, as well as the softly renewed Corolla Cross from 2026. Toyota put me in a beautiful hotel and fed me a lot of delicious food and drinks for a few days, but none of these deeds influenced my reviews. I only had a very short time behind the wheel of the new Corolla Cross, but this is what I learned in that short time.
No surprises, or excitement, here
The updated Corolla Cross offers no surprises, apart from its impressively low price, which I think is the greatest possession. The Corolla cross of the front-wheel drive starts at just $ 26,130 (including $ 1,495 destination), while the Corolla Cross Hybrid starts at $ 30,490 with standard four-wheel drive. Combined with its exceptionally predicted reliability and resale values, the Corolla Cross represents good value and both powertrain options are only $ 600 more expensive than last year.
All 2026 Corolla Crosses Come Standard With A 7-inch Digital Gauge Cluster and An 8-inch Touchscreen Infotainment System, Rear Climate VENS, Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Led Headlights and Taillights, and Include SafeSty Safe-SpeSty Safe-Spe-Spe-Spe-Spe-Spe-Spe-Spe-Spe-Spe-Spe-Speed-Spe-Spe-Spe-Speed-Speed-Speed Control and Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist As Well as Automated Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection. Shoppers can upgrade to a new 10.5-inch infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch digital meter cluster, and add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
Dynamics is sufficient
It is not an exciting or exciting vehicle to drive, but the Corolla Cross is completely benign and easy to deal with low speeds. The CVT is flexible, there is a good view of the road that lies in front of us (and clearly visibility), and most controls are easy to get acquainted with yourself. But as the speeds increase, there is a lot of engine noise that penetrates the interior, and even more tire sound. Fortunately, my top Trim Corolla Cross Xle AWD was equipped with the optional JBL Premium audio system, which actually has good sound quality and a lot of power to drown out all the less desirable sounds of the car.
There is no extra power for both powertrain for 2026, unfortunately, so the gas cross cross does it with 169 hp and 151 LB-FT torque, while the hybrid is more spriteer with 196 combined electric and gas cuddly. The Corolla Cross gas is still slow, but not clearly slower than its competition from Subaru, Hyundai or Honda. It offers sufficient slide for most driving conditions, make sure you give yourself enough time to collect speed when you pass a semi on a two -lane road or in hurry traffic. The hybrid feels much more responsive thanks to the immediate electricity delivery of its rear electric motor.
The Corolla Cross acts. That is the best way to describe it. The crossover is not exciting, fun or playful, but at the same time it does not feel like it will be understeer of the road or rolls in strong winds. The driving dynamics is totally sufficient, especially for the “I just want a car with Apple CarPlay that brings me from point A to point B” that will probably buy the vast majority of Corolla crosses.
They are efficient and spacious
It makes up for this by giving back good fuel consumption. Toyota estimates that gas-powered FWD Corolla Crosses Return Return 31 MPG City, 33 MPG Highway and 32 MPG combined. AWD Add to the nonhybrid Cross drops those figures with two MPG each fall on most decorations. Choosing the AWD Hybrid Powertrain brings a significant improvement in fuel efficiency – it should return 46 mpg to the city, 39 mpg on the highway and 42 mpg combined.
I found the 10-way adjustable front seats on my XLE grade test car spacious and comfortable, but I can’t talk about the comfort of the standard 6-way manually adjustable driver’s seat in lower decorations. All the arm of the front seats in the Corolla Cross are poorly filled and my bony elbows hurt almost immediately. Thanks to the upright form of Corolla Cross, the rear seat offers a reasonable legroom if occupants for the front seat are prepared to get a little forward and a good amount of headroom.
The cargo capacity behind is approximately 17 cubic foot behind the second row seats in the hybrid and AWD gas models, which spread to 44 cubic foot with the rear seats folded. Previous AWD on the Corolla only Corolla raises that space with two cubic foot in each metric. The cargo space is wide and square, what helps it easy to make useful, but the dimensions are two cubic foot smaller than the Subaru Crosstreks with the rear seats up, and 10 cubic base smaller when the rear seats are folded.
A perfectly enough car
From my short time in the renewed Corolla Cross from 2026 I found no major problems with the car, but on the other hand there was nothing that excited me or brought me there. It is a very logical choice thanks to the low price, fuel consumption, functionality and exceptional reliability and resale values, but man Is it boring. The hybrid powertrain lines things a bit and returns an exceptional fuel consumption, so if you need a Corolla cross, I would recommend forcing the extra dough for the electrified powertrain.
In a busy and competitive segment of subcompact crossovers that the equally boring-but-functional Honda HR-V includes, the flashy Hyundai Kona, the slim Mazda CX-30, the cheap Chevrolet Trax and the sympathetic Subaru Crosstrek in the background. But for buyers who do not care about personality and champion simplicity, usability, reliability and efficiency, it is 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross a completely reasonable choice.
