Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia is open registrations are important for the Jaecoo J5, the brand’s B-segment SUV presented in August this year.
While Thailand will receive the model as a battery-electric vehicle, Malaysia will get the J5 with a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine that produces 147 hp and 210 Nm and drives the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission.
With a length of 4,380 mm, 1,860 mm wide and 1,650 mm high and a wheelbase of 2,620 mm, the J5 is more than 10 mm longer between the axles than the Honda HR-V and Chery Tiggo Cross, and 20 mm longer than that of the Proton X50. Comparing the J5 to its larger sibling, the J7 is 4,500mm long, 1,865mm wide and 1,680mm high and has a wheelbase of 2,672mm.
The exterior of the J5 gets conventional door handles compared to the recessed pop-out units on the J7, and Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia points out that the J5 stands out among its B-segment SUV peers thanks to its MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link setup for the rear, which is unusual in the segment.




Inside, the Jaecoo J5 gets an 8-inch widescreen instrument display for the driver and a 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with 2K resolution, with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with a built-in karaoke function with a mixer (microphones sold separately, according to Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia).
Other conveniences offered by the J5 include Omoda’s antibacterial, scratch-resistant seat covers | Jaecoo Malaysia says it is pet friendly. In terms of safety and assistance, the J5 gets a range of Level 2.5 features, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and more. Elsewhere, the J5’s luggage capacity is 480 liters with the 60:40 split-folding rear seats, or up to 1,180 liters with the seats folded.
The opening of interesting registrations for the Jaecoo J5 should mean that the official market launch for the B-segment SUV should take place soon. Will this, estimated at RM120k, be your choice in this highly competitive segment?
