Overview
While a regular PGA Tour tournament consists of four straight rounds of individual impact game, the Ryder Cup is very different. Two teams of 12 players each from the United States and Europe compete in 28 total matches, which are played for three days.
The first two days of the competition contain eight double team matches: four in the morning and four in the afternoon (that is 16 total team matches during the first two days). The third day of the competition is devoted to 12 singles matches, in which each player competes against another in a head-to-head match.
The selection of each session and the order of the game are made by the team captain. That is Keegan Bradley for the US and Luke Donald for the Europeans.
Match-play formats
Ryder Cup team matches are played in two different sizes: Four-Ball (Best Ball) and Foursomes (alternative shot). On Bethpage Black on Friday and Saturday, four cushion are played in the morning session followed by Four-Ball in the afternoon session. In both quads and four balls, only eight of the 12 players of each team participate in each session. Some players can be called to play both the morning and afternoon on one or both days, while others may not play at all.

In Foursomes, one player is Tees and the partner of that player hits the next shot. The two alternate and touch the same ball until the ball is excluded. The players also alternate who is rejected on every subsequent gap. The lowest score wins that hole for that team.
In Vier-Ball, each player plays his own ball on each hole. The lowest score of the couple on each hole counts for the team, and the team with the lowest score wins the gap.
Singles Play is the grand finale of the Ryder Cup and includes all 12 members of each team. Each player plays his own ball in a head-to head match against his opponent. The lowest score between the two players wins the gap.
Scoring
If a player makes a birdie in the individual battle and makes his opponent a double bogey, that is an advantage with three shots. In competition game, however, each hole is worth one point or you win it with one battle or five.
Winning a hole with a score lower than your opponent means that you are 1 up. If two players link a hole, that match is considered even, connected or completely square. There are no transfer to the following holes.
In contrast to a stroke, photos can be admitted in match game, so it is not mandatory to finish a hole. For example, if a player goes for Birdie, while his opponent has a putt for par, the par putt can be picked up because the gap has been won and it is no longer relevant.
The match is over when the benefit of a player is greater than the number of remaining holes. For example, if a player wins the 16th hole to go up 3, the game would end and the score of the game would reflect a 3 and 2 victory: 3 with 2 holes to play. The players do not continue to play as soon as a match is over.
If a match is bound on the 18th hole, it stays when scoring. Players don’t go any extra holes.
Each of the 28 Ryder Cup matches is worth one point. Players or teams who win a match, a match, claim that point for their team. In the case of a draw after 18 holes, the point is shared – each 0.5 points. No points are awarded for loss.

How many points to win Ryder Cup?
Because Europe won the last Ryder Cup in Rome in 2023, they only need 14 points to keep it. The US needs 14.5 points to claim the Ryder Cup again.
Singles competitions that are underway on Sunday, as soon as the Ryder Cup has been granted, will continue with completion for posterity, even if they are no longer relevant to the ultimate result of the Ryder Cup.
Ryder Cup history
Europe has won 10 of the last 14 Ryder cups, but only three of those victories were on foreign soil. The US has won three of the last four Ryder Cups to be played in America.
