If you’re curious about PNC Championship pros, you can get something out of the annual scramble event for pro family members.
And they also get a check.
If you ask Padraig Harrington, there is an immeasurable reward waiting for the PNC.
“I don’t think without the PNC Championship my kids will have a much greater love for the game of golf because of that,” he said. “Golf can be – for any child of a professional golfer it can be quite a frustrating game. There are always high expectations. This is the ideal event in terms of a competition, it’s relaxed, it’s family oriented and it gets them into playing. It gets them into playing in a competitive environment without being super competitive.”
“They’re not trying to be pros. They’re just trying to hit some good shots here and enjoy it. There’s really no such thing. I always have to be grateful to PNC for giving my kids that interest in the game of golf so that they want to assert themselves and be respectable. They want to hit some good shots and show up and at least give the impression that someone would say, oh, if they had tried a little harder or worked a little more, they could have been some kind of professional.”
A reporter then asked if it is easy for a child of a professional to be driven out of the game.
“Unfortunately for the sons of professional golfers or daughters, it’s very competitive,” Harrington said. “They see their dad, their parents, competing with each other all the time, the highs and lows of that. And the expectations when everyone shows up and watches them, there’s always expectations. It’s a pretty tough, frustrating game being the parent.”
“Especially because we’ve been so good and so much better than our kids for so long. Like I probably passed my dad in golf at 13, 13, 14 years old. So it’s hard for the kids.”
“This is a way to get them interested, get them working on the game and get them looking forward to something in a very, very relaxed way.”
With that, here are the cash payouts for the PNC Championship. The total purse is $1.08 million.
