Welcome to the 22nd week of our NL Central Power Rankings! We will release these rankings every week to assess all five teams and place them one to five. As everyone knows with power ranking, they must be considered as a gospel and are clearly 100% accurate. Let’s rank some teams without further delay!
1. Milwaukee Brewers (81-48); 4-4 this week; > 99.9% chance to make late season (baseball reference)
The Brewers had one of their worst weeks in a while, and by “worst” I mean .500 playing baseball, taking two of the three of the Reds, dropping three of the five to the Cubs and won a Friday night thriller on a walk-off Homer against the Giants.
William Contreras hit the aforementioned Walk-Off Homer, picking up seven hits, including a few homers, in the week. Brice Also hit a few long balls while he continued a great month of August and picked up a team-high 12 hits to cut .429 /.500/.714. Caleb Durbin, Andraw Monasterio and Christian Yelich Homered also, while Sal Frelick finished second in the team with nine hits, including three Doubles.
Quinn Priester made a few solid starts, a total of 9 2/3 innings with three permitted points and a team-high nine strikeouts. Freddy Peralta continues to make an impression because he worked six scoreless frames against the Cubs with six strikeouts to pick up his MLB-leading 15th victory of the year. Jose Quintana also made a few solid starts, while Tobias Myers and Abner Uribe were both nails from the bullpen.
Milwaukee continues the Homstand with the Giants and D-Backs for seven games until Thursday. They then go to Toronto for a fast three-game road trip to end the month.
2. Chicago Cubs (74-55); 6-2 this week; 99.7% chance to make late season
The Cubs jump back in our number 2 spot with a solid 6-2 week, including a 3-2 series against the Brewers to take the season series. Last weekend they won two of the three against the Pirates and took the series opener on Friday against the Angels.
Owen Ciassie hit his first career homer this week, while Pete Crow-Armstrong, who has struggled enormously in recent weeks, hit the Go-Ahead Homer in the ninth against the Angels on Friday evening. Caissie was the only player who led more than .300 BAT for the week, while Michael Busch led the team with seven hits, although he only struck .241/.290/.310 in general.
Shota Imanaga made a few solid starts but also had no victory, because he achieved a total of 14 innings with three permitted points (1.93 ERA) and a team-high 11 strikeouts. Javier Assad also made a few solid starts, with 10 innings with two permitted points (1.80 ERA) and seven strikeouts. Brad Keller worked 3 2/3 scoreless frames in four trips and picked up a save, while Caleb Thielbar and Drew Pomeranz also worked scoreless weeks of the Bullpen.
The Cubs close Augustus from the West, because they take the angels this weekend to visit the Giants and Rockies that will be on their way next weekend.
3. Cincinnati Reds (67-62); 3-3 this week; 39.3% chance to make late season
The Reds broke Milwaukee’s 14-game Losing Streak with an extra innings victory on Sunday before they grabbed two of the three of the Anaheim in Anaheim. They dropped the series opener on Friday with the D-backs.
Noelvi Marte continues to play well, with a few gayers and a team-high 10 hits this week, because now he is .302/.338/.519 hits 10 homers, 40 RBIs and 30 runs over 59 games this season. Ke’bryan Hayes had a solid week with his new team, which picked up eight hits, including a Homer, and the same applies to Miguel Andujar, who had seven hits, including three Doubles.
Andrew Abbott was solid against Milwaukee on Sunday, so that no runs over seven frames with seven strikeouts allowed, and Nick Martinez worked six innings with one point allowed and seven strikeouts in its start. Brady Singer also had a quality principle to pick up the victory, while Tony Santillan, Connor Phillips, Sam Moll and Brent Sutter had scoreless bull pen weeks.
The Reds continue their western coastal journey with series against the D-backs and Dodgers up to and including Wednesday. They get a day off on Thursday before they welcome the cardinals for three games to finish Augustus.
4. St. Louis Cardinals (64-66); 3-4 this week; 3.3% chance to make the late season
The cardinals were swept by the Yankees during the weekend before they took two of the three from the Marlins to start this week. They are now confronted with the rays, with whom they have split the first two games of a three-game set.
Willson Contreras hit three gayers with five RBIs and scored five points this week, while Nolan Gorman added his own pair. Lars Nootbaar led the team with 11 hits, including two Doubles, while Alec Burleson had 10 hits, including a two -hree and a triple.
None of the starters had a great week, because each of them allowed at least three runs in every match. Riley O’Brien and Matt Svanson were the only scoreless arms of the Bullpen this week, while Jojo Romero took a save but also took a loss.
After being completed on Sunday with Tampa, they return home for a fast four-game set with the Pirates before they go on the road again to enter the Reds in Cincinnati next weekend.
5. Pittsburgh Pirates (55-74); 3-3 this week; <0.1% chance to make late season
The Pirates dropped two of the three to the Cubs last weekend before they took two of the three against the Blue Jays to start the week. They won Friday’s series opener against the Rockies in a fight of two terrible teams.
Alexander Canario, Spencer Horwitz and Tommy Pham have all searched Pittsburgh this week, while Nick Gonzales led the team with seven hits and four scored points. Bryan Reynolds added six hits, including four Doubles.
Paul Skenes worked a different start of quality, making two runs allowed and threw eight over six frames, while Braxton Ashcraft and Johan Oviedo each took the victory with solid five-after start. Carmen Mlodzinski worked four innings with only one undeserved run allowed in its start, while Bubba Chandler, MLB’s best Pitching Prospect, worked four scoreless innings for the rescue on Friday evening. Yohan Ramírez, Evan Sisk, Dennis Santana, Chase Shugart and Kyle Nicolas also had scoreless Bullpen weeks, with Santana gathering a few rescues.
After they had completed the Homstand on Sunday, the Pirates will set off to close Augustus because they will stop for four games in St. Louis and three games in Boston.
