More than five months after the end of Super Bowl 59, NFL football makes its long-awaited return tonight. Although it may only be in the form of the Hall of Fame game, a live presentation of a football matchup is difficult to beat – and only the start of a long Odyssey.
Training camps offer a glimpse of the versions of players and new coaching staff, but in the previous season matches, even if they do not really count, are where competition is increasing and skills are put to the test. These five story lines are among the most fascinating when the Lei of Augustus starts.
The game of second -year Quarterbacks
The Quarterback class 2024 of the NFL was one of the umbrella storylines of the season. With Jayden Daniels (90.6 pff general figure) the commanders prop about to the NFC Championship Game and Bo Nix (78.3 pff general figure) who knew the long-term play-off drought of the Broncos, first-year men under Center immediately offered dividends. Now the rest of the group will try to leave his mark.
The spotlights will probably be the smartest in Chicago, such as Caleb Williams Try to make a second -year jump after a disappointing inaugural campaign. As Rookie, the number 1 general pick only generated a 63.5 pff-passing figure with a turnover of 2.6% for worthy playing speed. With the bears that both their attacking line upgrade and receive corps – and adding one of the most important offensive gaming callers of the NFL in Ben Johnson – the roof for Williams are expectations. He may have to calm quiet doubters in the preseason.
The game of JJ McCarthy holds in the NFC North, will determine the season of the Vikings. McCarthy provided optimism based on his lonely presidential game in 2024, placing an 84.0 PFF-PASSING figure with a large throw and one turnover-worthy game on 19 dropbacks against the Raiders. Early reports suggest that the 10th everywhere from last year has had a Topsy-Turvy first few practices, and the preseason will be crucial to assess both his play and health after knee operation.
Male -duck Maye (64.9 pff passing degrees) will also be under a microscope in New England, with the Patriot returning attacking coordinator Josh McDaniels and upgrading both their receiving corps and an attack line. Michael Penix will also be Jr. (87.6 Pff pass on 114 dropbacks) Hope to prove that his run in the late season if the starter of the Falcons was not a coincidence.
Who gets a lead in positional fighting
The distribution of repetitions of the first team during camp practices is one of the more concrete collection restaurants from a period in which things can be cloudy. Pre -season competitions yourself only help to refine individual competitions, especially on the basis of Snap counts and orders.
For several teams there will be an open battle below the middle – and three pre -season games will play a huge role in shaking that. The BrownS must decide between Joe Flacco (70.7 pff passing degrees), Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders and Kenny Pickett, who may look on the outside as he provides a hamstring injury. In the meantime, the Colts will choose a starter between Anthony Richardson (62.2 pff general figure) and Daniel Jones (72.0 pff general figure). Coaches may have first representation for how they want to assign Snaps, but a player can easily force his hand by excel.
Quarterback matches take most of the headlines naturally, but other position groups in the competition have multiple start-caliber options with only a handful of roles. For example, the primary left -wing tackle of the Chiefs (Josh Simmons versus Jeylon Moore), the RB1 roll of Broncos (JK Dobbins versus RJ Harvey), the Right Guard spot of the Eagles (Matt pryor versus Versus Kenyon Green (Juety -Starter Versus versus versus versus versus versus versus which also performs better.
Young standouts that exercise meaningful roles
The dozens of pre -season matches may not have much gravity, but what can Translate to week 1 and after that players under the radar are gathering playing time and starting repetitions. Apparently every preseason flourishes a handful of names, which means that unexpected players make grilles and even knots.
Maybe a candidate 2024 can be first round Darius Robinsonwho is now in a deep line of defense room after the additions of the Cardinals of Calais CampbellWalter Nolen and Dalvin Tomlinson. Robinson Together with only a general figure of 48.4 PFF on 184 Snaps last year, because he treated a calf injury, but apparently destroyed in ArizonaThe provisional practices.
Previous presentations indicate that good play is almost impossible to ignore. Steelers Edge Rusher Nick Herbig, for example, could not be blocked last preseason and registered a 92.6 Pff Pass-Rushing figure on 33 snaps. That production, in combination with injuries to teammates, led to his fast count almost doubled in his second year. Jordan Mason (86.3 pff hasty degrees) spoke in the back -up of the 49 people as a result of a stellar in previous season, eventually gathering 153 carryas. Rams Linebacker Omar Speights (90.6 pff general number) also laid a good foundation in August, so that the road was cleared for a starting role towards the end of 2024.
If history is an indication, at least a few rookies or not -approved players will play a layer over all others. Looking at this year’s contingent will be fascinating.
Stars returning from an injury
NFL teams fluctuate based on how much duration they give their normal starters in the preseason. Some veterans hardly play any more than a handful of snaps, while others gradually increase snap counts to prepare for the rigorous regular season. In particular, the availability of those who return from great injuries is always worth seeing.
Christian McCaffrey (90.3 PFF Total Number in 2023) fits for only 167 Snaps last season, which ends Achilles and knee injuries. Will the 49 people even show the dual all-pro this previous season, given that he has not played in the preseason since 2019? A healthy McCaffrey is dazzling in every environment, although the worsening of an injury in August would be unwise.
Other players to keep an eye on the actual touch of the field in the preseason include Buccaneers receiver Chris Godwin (86.3 Pff General Number on 397 Snaps), Raiders Edge Rusher Maxx Crosby (74.3 PFFT Total Linter dexter), Defensieve Linter dexter Lawrence (89.9 pff total number on 551 snaps) and Dolphins Edge Rusher Bradley Chubb (88.8 pff general figure in 2023; zero snaps in 2024).
The use of new assets
The preseason offers fans a legitimate first look at players who attract new uniforms. With an avalanche of transactions and large signing sessions that have occurred in recent months, we were able to see players as Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf and Geno Smith debut with their new organizations. But what is especially compelling is to collect how some flexible pieces can be coordinated in new schemes.
The Steelers drew a late summer star when they landed Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith from the dolphins in June. Ramsey (76.9 pff general figure) probably seems to play mainly in the lock, where 18% of his Snaps took place last year – and where he registered a 61.3 pff -cover quality (65th percentile). But will Ramsey Snaps order the Buitenhoek, Safety or even along the line of defense? How will offensive coordinator Arthur Smith Smith now arm Smith after a career season (83.4 pff receiving figure), especially working together with Pat Freiermuth?
Much of the same applies to commanders receiver Deebo Samuel (72.1 pff receiving degree), Falcons Rookie defender Jalon Walker (249 Snaps along the defense line and in the box in 2024), Dolphins Defensive Back Minkah Fitzpatrick) and Beren Woke-High-High-Highontoont Luther Barden III (80.2 pff received figure). Coordinators probably don’t want to show their hands so early, but can unveil new fangled assets.
