The report card of 2024-2025 JT Miller is perhaps only based on 32 games, but it was a solid 32 games for the New Rangers 1C, who acquired the Rangers in January. By sending Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini and a 1st round pick to Vancouver for Miller, the Rangers have set a great need by gaining a real 1C, both Mika Zibanejad and Vincent Trocheck to the 2C and 3C spots (label them, Semantiek). Miller’s acquisition was the big piece in a much needed overhaul of the dressing room.
In 32 games, Miller placed 12-22-35 while he took over 1C tasks from Zibanejad. Miller also put 3-5-8 on the PowerPlay, where he finally finished on PP1 with the injury of Chris Kreider who took him out of the line-up. It is worth mentioning Miller shot 23.6%So his 12 goals on 55 shots were a bit high. That percentage will certainly come down, but during a full season it is fair to expect a floor of 70 points from Miller, while it probably draws the best defensive assignments from the opposition.
Miller’s impact was two -time: the Rangers had to identify a new 1C with Zibanejad who struggled, and they had to change the vibes in the dressing room. Miller’s arrival coincided with the awakening of Zibanejad in the second half of the season. It is probably a coincidence, but it is also fair to say that both benefited from each other when they were on the same line.
When joining the Rangers, Miller played on all strengths. Miller collected 4 shorted assists and added more power to the Penalty Kill, a bright spot of the blues shirts last year. As long as father keeps his distance, Miller’s acquisition looks like a solid one for the blues shirts.
Miller did everything to get to the Rangers. Last season was an audition. This season is the full show. He had no big impact in the dressing room when he returned to the Rangers, but this is now his team. Let’s see what he is doing with it.
