Adam Edstrom was a bit of a revelation for the Rangers last season before an injury on the upper body ended his season. A consistent winger on one of the better fourth lines in the competition, Edstrom played 51 games before his injury ended his season. He set up a solid 5-4-9 while getting The overwhelming defensive zone starts. In addition to Sam Carrick and a rotation including Matt Rempe, the fourth rule of Rangers was surprisingly solid in their own end, which showed that they can be a closing line.
The key with the fourth line of the Rangers was limiting the chances of high danger, which did much better than most other rangers, despite the team problems. Edstrom’s High Danger Shot Share was a touch of less than 50% at 49.72%, much better than most other attackers when taking the start -context zone. Some can indicate the 45% XG share of Edstrom, but that was weighed by low dangerous opportunities (37% shot share).
The numbers translate somewhat well into our standard player cards, but again context is ready. Edstrom is not on the ice to produce attack, which checks out with most of his advanced and micro states. Instead, his role was defensive, where he clearly excelled. Because this was only his first season, there is enough space to grow into a prominent closing wing with size and a power to move the puck on the ice.
The ideal fourth rule starts in the defensive zone, limits the opportunities, pushes the game on the ice and ends the shift in the attacking zone. Edstrom did exactly that. Now it is a matter of pleasing his game with one of the best coaches in the NHL today.
There is not much more to say about the Rookie season of Adam Edstrom. He was full of firm and should continue to improve.
