Luke Donald will be the first to tell you that the most important factor is when winning a Ryder Cup to let your stars play as stars. The European Ryder Cup team 2025 built a dominant lead over the Americans in Bethpage Black thanks to Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm were who Europe needed them to be.
“You need your big players to perform,” Donald said Sunday at Bethpage Black after the victory of Europe 15-13. ‘Looking at Rome, Viktor [Hovland] Was our FedExcup champion. We had Rory. We had Jon. They had 10.5 points without playing together in Rome.
“This week, Rory won four out of five. Jon, three out of five. … You could claim that Tommy may be four out of five. You absolutely need your big weapons to shoot, and that is what we are proud of, that the big boys of the American boys, their weapons, they didn’t get as many points as ours.”
This was true for two days at Bethpage Black. McIlroy, Rahm, Fleetwood and Justin Rose were dominant when Europe built a 12-5 lead after the Sunday WD of Viktor HOvland due to a neck injury. But the large weapons of Europe were clearly tired of the mental grind of the Ryder Cup. And while their stars fell during the singles on Sunday while the Americans mounted a furious rally, Donald needed others to save the day.
Shane Lowry’s draw with Russell Henley eventually ensured the preservation of the cup through Europe, but the blue-and-gold would not have conquered Bethpage without two critical early competitions that stabilized the procedure and allowed Lowry to nail the last battle.
The first came from Matt Fitzpatrick, who jumped early in the third game of the day about Bryson Deschambeau. Fitzpatrick went up 5 by seven holes only to see Deschambeau Rally to bind the game to 17. With Rose, Fleetwood and Rahm, McIlroy already defeated that was on fumes against Scottie Scheffler, Europe needed Fitzpatrick to save a draw against Deschambeau against Dechambeau to get the breath.
Fitzpatrick, who entered the week with a career 1-7-0 Ryder Cup record, split the fairway at 18 and broke his approach shot to 39 feet. With the pressure, Fitzpatrick hit his delay to 10 centimeters to come with par and secure half a point for Europe. He finished the week 2-1-1 and brought Europe closer to the victory by stopping one of the big weapons of America to complete what a momentum-rebur comeback would have been.
Just after Fitzpatrick had secured half a point, Ludvig Ć berg, who was a Ryder Cup -smokie in Rome in 2023, but since then flourished into a star, the finishing touches against Patrick Cantlay, and 2 up to bring Europe to half a point of retaining the cup. The last member of Europe’s Sunday Singles “Firewall” was the only one to put a blue flag on the board.
“Today I was proud of the way I played,” said Ć berg Sunday. āAnd I am proud to be part of this team.
As far as Fitzpatrick is concerned, the heroic of the four -fold Ryder Cupper will not be reminded by a quote or a single shot, but by two gestures that will live in European highlights. The first was a festive moment with the visiting European crowd on Saturday evening after he and Tyrrell Hatton Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay in Four-Ball had completed the Europeans giving the Europeans ahead of seven points.
“I have to cut this short,” Fitzpatrick said about his interview after he and Hatton’s momentum structure victories. “I want to celebrate with them. The atmosphere is not of this world.”
These are the moments to cherish.
Matt Fitzpatrick came back with the specific intention to celebrate with European fans. š

The second came on Sunday when he was locked up in a fight with Dephambeau.
After winning the 8th and 9th Holes, Decchambeau had cut the lead from Fitzpatrick to 3. With a wave of red building and the American crowd that Decchambeau tried to stimulate a comeback, Fitzpatrick needed a reaction. DCCHAMBEAU seemed ready to reduce the lead from Fitzpatrick to two when he answered the 12th bird, but the Englishman answered the crowd to calmly with his own bird and gestured – this would not be the American version of the ‘Wonder at Medinah’.
The unfortunate heroism of Fitzpatrick and Ć berg are representative of the greater reason for the European Ryder Cup victory-a culture that asks 12 of the world’s best players to check their egos at the door of the team room and to do what is asked to cement their place in history. It is a culture that has a buy-in from each member.
“I think those weeks we spend together, are those we remember the most and those we cherish the most because of the time we can spend together,” Donald said about his success as a captain. āThat is a large part of my CaptainCy to create an environment in which these guys have the best weeks of their lives, to be honest. We will always remember this. We will always go into history. We talk about all the people who came to us for us. Now future generations will talk about this team and what they were able to overcome in all sport tonight.
“And that is inspiring for me and that is what Rory gets and all these other 11 boys will be.”
And Europe needed everyone to conquer Bethpage and write their names in the European Ryder Cup history.
